Background: The aim of this study was to assess the effect postoperative enteral nutrition support on the survival after orthotopic small bowel transplantation in mice.
Methods: A model of orthotopic small bowel transplantation used C57BL/6 mice as both donors and recipients.
Results: We demonstrated that postoperative ileus was the deciding complication after transplantation. Postoperative enteral nutritional support resolved this problem and significantly improved survival and growth rates after transplantation.
Conclusion: These data suggest the importance of routine nutritional support after orthotopic small bowel transplantation in mice.
