Multiple shoots were induced from nodal segments of mature trees of Ulmus pumila L. on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with benzyladenine (BA). Further multiple shoots were obtained from nodal segments taken from in vitro proliferated shoots when cultured in MS medium containing 0.5 mg.l(-1) BA. Rooting of the shoots was achieved on half or full strength MS medium or in MS medium supplemented with 0.1 mg.l(-1) naphtaleneacetic acid (NAA). Rooted plantlets were able to resume independent growth after a short period of acclimatization.
