Natural/spontaneous shunts in non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis

J Gastroenterol Hepatol. 1989 May-Jun;4(3):215-9. doi: 10.1111/j.1440-1746.1989.tb00828.x.

Abstract

Large natural/spontaneous shunts on splenoportovenography were demonstrated in 10 of 93 patients with non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis. There was significantly less bleeding in patients with spontaneous shunt than in those having no shunt. Large oesophageal varices (grade III-IV) were seen more frequently in patients without spontaneous shunt.
