Organizational rites and culture in a surgical residency program

Curr Surg. 1989 Sep-Oct;46(5):365-71.

Abstract

Six organizational rites in a surgical residency program were analyzed as a means to reveal aspects of the culture of the program. The rites generally depicted a program culture characterized by professional values of total commitment and availability, an ideology based on expert power, and strict behavioral norms supportive of the hierarchical program authority. These rites have important implications for leadership in surgical education.
