Stress experienced by parents of children with cochlear implants compared with parents of deaf children and hearing children

Abstract

Objective: To compare the stress experienced by parents of children with cochlear implants with that experienced by parents of deaf children and hearing children.

Study design: The Parenting Stress Index and problem-oriented interviews were used with the parents of these three groups of children.

Results: Parents of deaf children were found to experience greater levels of stress than parents in the other two groups.

Conclusion: Parents of children with cochlear implants experience about the same level of stress as parents of hearing children.
