Abstract

The acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a nonspecific host response to a variety of injurious agents that often are divided into those related to airways and those resulting from a vascular insult. The known predisposing factors usually result in the recognized clinical syndrome within 72 hours of exposure.
