The best hotels are all about the personal touch. Take The Sandpiper in our new Caribbean category. Opened in 1970, it’s still going strong, with design handled by the family who run it and rum cocktails served by Harold Shepherd, now in his 35th year of working there. On the soft sands of Tulum, Papaya Playa Project launched in 2011 as a pop-up but never popped down. It scooped top marks for food and activities, while beachside Fasano Rio was liked for its Philippe Starck design. In the USA, The Whitby in New York scored skyscraping points across most criteria, Santa Monica’s Shutters on the Beach was rewarded for its scene-stealing location, and high design ratings were presented to Freehand in LA, The Verb in Boston and The Dean in Providence, Rhode Island.
