The Woodstock ’99 music festival may have been an unmitigated disaster, but that town and that year brought us something far more lasting: The Woodstock Film Festival.
Fast-forward to 2024, and we’re celebrating the film fest’s 25th year. Among the slate’s highlights this fall is Paul Schrader’s latest film “Oh, Canada,” which will screen on Saturday, October 19. The screening will be followed by a conversation with Schrader, who will be further celebrated with the Honorary Maverick Award.
The 2024 festival will take place from October 15-20 at venues across the Hudson Valley towns of Woodstock, Rosendale, Kingston, and Saugerties. The centerpiece selection is Steve McQueen’s “Blitz,” with Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain” closing the festival.

As concerns around President Biden’s age continue to weigh on the 2024 presidential campaign, “The View” host Ana Navarro has a suggestion for him: make an advertisement starring celebrities of a certain age. Among those older celebrities? Her cohosts Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar.
Monday’s episode of the ABC talk show was dedicated to celebrating Goldberg’s 68th birthday, but they did manage to sneak in one Hot Topic at the top of the show. That topic was Carol Alt, who has joined OnlyFans at age 62.
For the most part, the women of “The View” were largely supportive, saying that it’s just another example of defying ageism. Eventually, Navarro offered an idea for how Biden himself might combat ageism.
“I keep thinking that the Biden campaign should do a commercial where they have, like, Martha Stewart, and Mick Jagger, who’s out on tour, and, you know, Gladys Knight,...

Tori Amos on Kevyn Aucoin, the famous makeup artist of the '80s and '90s: "Some of us were addicted to him making us beautiful and he was addicted to making us beautiful."

In the first installment of my conversation with Tiffany Bartok, the director of Larger Than Life: The Kevyn Aucoin Story, we start out with her fascination for impostors, the recent deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, and how each person was reflected in Kevyn Aucoin and "when there was no one left, then he had to just look at himself."
Bartok's revelatory documentary on the famous make-up artist's life and legacy is alluringly illustrated through interviews with Brooke Shields, Cher, Tori Amos, Paulina Porizkova, Carol Alt, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Veronica Webb, Isaac Mizrahi, and the footage shot by Eric Sakas.

Ken (Dale Midkiff) and Bob (Preston Maybank) land in a propeller plane and speed off on motorcycles to a large mansion. Ken calls Julie Clingstone (Debbie Laster) via radio as Bob scales the side of the building. Julie wants him to give her access to “the mainframe” when suddenly, somewhere a puppet (yes, a puppet) begins yelling Danger! Danger!, obviously aware of the imminent intrusion. Edward Brake (Wellington Meffert) is sleeping in bed in the mansion while Bob takes off his necklace and lays it on the ledge after reaching the mansion’s roof. He rotates a parabolic dish and the puppet, operating some sort of a crude computer and using telepathic powers, makes the necklace turn into a sphere (think Phantasm). Bob starts to bleed from the face and falls to his death. The action breaks into the opening credits to “Nightmare” as sung by Miriam Stockley.

Ender’s Game is set to win the weekend box office despite calls for a boycott, but with a pace for $28 million, that’s not exactly the numbers you’re looking for to launch a new franchise of an expensive movie, so maybe we had the desired effect after all.

The first annual Women and Fashion Film Fest, was founded by Jeanine Jeo-Hi Kim, and brings together the fashion and film industries in order to educate, inspire and examine pressing issues. The mission statement, as per Ms. Kim, “Our Film Fest will spotlight talent, create a forum of women’s issues, as well as, support the creative development of women and students. We will distinguish ourselves through content, compelling panels, and the participation of industry leaders.”
Day 1 was incredible.
In the documentary, Girl Model, the viewer follows Nadya Vall, a young, country girl living in Novokuznetsk, Siberia as she pursues a modeling contract with a Japanese agency that will allow her to travel to Tokyo and earn $8,000 Usd. When she and her colleague arrive unchaperoned, they face language barriers, uncertainty of paid work, weight issues and homesickness.
As many turn to what appears to be the fun, glamorous, financially lucrative, “living the dream,” creative world of fashion, in order to escape from tough economic conditions, the harsh reality still remains that careers in the industry are difficult to break into, are usually begun when girls are just that, ‘girls’ and are still emotionally and physically immature. Also, it usually takes a major investment of your own money to get comp cards and a portfolio together, and can ultimately lead to many dangerous outcomes, such as, eating disorders, drug addiction, kidnappings, sexual harassment, and prostitution.
Luckily, documentaries and discussions can shed light on these human rights issues.
Some of the opinions and statements from the first day of screenings and panel discussions from fashion veterans:
“The Industry remains “The Wild West” and needs laws on the books to help sort through these disconcerting issues. Through legislation and collective conversation, change can occur.”
“Change starts at home through education, preparation and parenting.”
“The industry needs regulation.”
“It is society’s fault. Why do these models have to start at such a young age?”
“The industry needs to be unionized.”
“It is a human rights issue.”
“We are all accountable for our behavior.”
“The careers should be started at 18 years old, the legal working age.”
“Don’t take a job, unless you know how much you are going to make.”
This was a fast response to the problem at hand. As per an article on June 12, 2013,
In the short film, “Blank Canvas,” a woman who has lost all of her hair due to an advanced stage of cancer, demonstrates how she handles the social stigma attached to being bald by having creative Henna designs drawn on to her scalp.
Meanwhile, the short film, “34′′ x 25′′ x 36′′,” philosophized, ”Do we worship the perfect woman?” “Do people have to believe in something?” “What is our salvation as a society?” “Is ‘Barney’s’ the church for today? (insinuating that more people flock to the stores, than to church).
HBO documentary, About Face: Supermodels, Then and Now by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, starts off with the “Velvet Underground” and “Nico” song, “Mirror; I’ll be your mirror, reflect what you are.”
and gets up close and personal with the Supermodels from back in the day; Carmen Dell’Orefice, Isabella Rossellini, Christie Brinkley, Christy Turlington, Jerry Hall, Carol Alt, Paulina Porizkova, Pat Cleveland, Beverly Johnson, Eileen Ford, and Brooke Shields.
Main points from the film: “It is a woman’s business.” “It’s about character and beauty.” ”Modelling allowed me to not have to rely on my father or husband for money.” “It offered me a way to express myself in a way that can not be expressed in words.” “It was an attitude.” “It was living in a bubble.” “I was told to act like I was the most beautiful thing.” “I watched a lot of friends get lost in the wave and pass away from drugs or disease.” “We were clothes hangers.” “Misogyny.” “Confidence.” “Innocent.” “Naivety.” “Discrimination. Color barriers.” “Glad I didn’t die in the process.” “Why shouldn’t we be allowed to age?” Woman are everything; mothers, wives, and business women.” “When I looked like that, I should have walked around naked all the time.” “Modeling: demonstrates insecurity. I’m more beautiful now that I am not a model.” “We all have to go sometime, I want to go with my high heels on.”
Topics discussed in the panel: “Diversity,” “Retouching Photos,” “Strong sense of self” “Strides in diversity,” “Beauty the way you are.” “The more women writers that enter the industry, the better.” “Media should promote healthy eating and living.” “Be true to yourself.” “Aging. Celebrate women as they advance.” “Be Humble.” “Be honest with yourself.” “Spontaneous.” “Fearlessness,” and a “Sense of Humor.”
And wrapping up Day 1: Ralph Rucci: A Designer and his House, by David Boatman displays the hard work involved in creating and displaying a collection.

The Paris Theater was the place to be last night (June 18) as Madonna and Kelly Osbourne both attended the New York City premiere of “Madonna: The Mdna Tour.”
Joined by her boyfriend Brahim Zaibat, Madge looked lovely in a black top hat and full tuxedo as she greeted her fans and members of the press.
Meanwhile, Kelly brought her main man Matthew Mosshart along for the ride and got all gussied up in some duds reminiscent of Madonna’s style back in the 1980s.
Also in the house were stars like Carol Alt, Caroline Rhea, Nicky Hilton, Andy Cohen, Beth Ortosky, and Jourdan Dunn.

Co-starring in Bj McDonnell’s first directorial effort as a Southern sheriff in way over his head, Zach Galligan has seen almost everything throughout his career. But he’s never seen mosquitoes quite as big as the ones swarming across the swamplands down in Louisiana on the set of Hatchet III.
When I spoke with Zach recently, thankfully, both of us were quite comfortable and indoors.
Dread Central: I know you grew up in the New York area as a big horror fan when you were a kid. You watched the Universal monsters growing up, then basically got to act alongside them in Waxwork, and you’ve also been a part of the new breed of classic monsters with Gremlins and now Victor Crowley in Hatchet III. Would that little kid who loved Chiller Theatre be pretty impressed with how things turned out?

Carol Alt has landed her own weekend show on the Fox News Channel, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. In somewhat of a departure for the network, the 1980s supermodel won't be discussing politics or current events but instead will offer advice on beauty and healthy living. Alt became a sensation in 1982 when she was featured on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and her image has graced about 700 magazine covers. At the peak of her popularity, Alt also self-produced calendars and posters, which became best-sellers and encouraged other models to do likewise. She has

Allen says, “So much of the action and activity in Rome takes place outside, in its cafes and streets. It’s an amazing city just to walk in. The city itself is a work of [...]...

During this year's Hot Docs film festival in Toronto, I had the chance to speak with director/photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders about About Face: Supermodels Then and Now, a documentary that captures much more than the one-dimensional portraits of iconic supermodels whose familiar visages have been splashed across magazines, billboards, and catalogs for decades. His casual and easy demeanor with women like Cheryl Tiegs, Beverly Johnson, Isabella Rossellini, China Machado, Christy Turlington and Carol Alt encourages a frank level of anecdotal dialogue that occasionally manages to go beyond the easy-breezy world of fashion and into the more sinister aspects behind the business of beauty. It's fascinating, entertaining, and more than a little enlightening to hear the insight offered from industry veterans on topics like racism, drugs, exploitation, plastic...

One of the year's most attractive documentaries is at hand.
"About Face: Supermodels Then and Now" makes its HBO debut Monday, July 30, after showings at this year's Sundance and L.A. Film Festivals. If aging gracefully is the goal, then we can learn a lot from the legendary supermodels in HBO's new series "About Face: Supermodels Then And Now."
Directed by renowned photographer and filmmaker Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, the series explores the stories of fashion's most iconic models: Jerry Hall, Christie Brinkley, Isabella Rossellini and Bethann Hardison, to name a few. Boasting candid interviews and stunning images, the show is sure to be a hit.
A few of our favorite fashion icons, Beverly Johnson and Pat Cleveland, showed off their age-defying beauty last night in New York City to fete the show, which premieres July 30.
Beverly looked smashing in a semi-sheer black sequin dress and peep-toe booties. Not many 59-year-olds could pull off this sexy look, but Beverly's supermodel powers have clearly stood the test of time.

Woody Allen’s latest offering charts his European Travel Period down south to Rome, Italy in “To Rome With Love.”
Fortunately, it proves a cure for the hangover I’ve had since the atrocious “Midnight in Paris.” (While I was not able to review that film in a timely manner, know that I Hated it. I realize many people disagree with me; of course they are entitled to their wrong opinion.)
Criminally, I have not set foot on Italian soil, but I’m going to give Woody the benefit of the doubt to say he captured the feeling of Italy since he did indeed capture the chilly, dull tones that of London in “You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger” that I know from living there.
The film opens with a beautiful drive around Rome, the terminus a traffic cop ineptly evoking Marcel Marceau as he...

Woody Allen’s next film, heretofore known as ‘Nero Fiddled’, was officially re-titled yesterday and given a new name that should see it resonate better in its international territories, and so from here on out we’ll know it as ‘To Rome With Love’.
We now have the first eleven images to share with you, some images of the film itself and others including Allen on set, as well as the full cast line-up (which is excellent) and the full soundtrack details (which are just a little bit impeccable).
The romantic-comedy is made up of four vignettes, two of which revolving around American characters and two around Italian characters, with the main cast including the likes of Allen himself, Alec Baldwin, Penélope Cruz, Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg, Roberto Benigni, Judy Davis, Greta Gerwig, and Alison Pill.

HollywoodNews.com: This morning, Studio 54 will wake up with a hangover, look around the floor for its clothes, and try to remember what happened last night. Now a dowager theatre home to the Roundabout, Studio will recall celebrating like it was 1977 last night, and was younger than springtime.
Oh yes, Studio 54. Liza, Calvin, Andy, Halston, Truman Capote. Bianca Jagger on the white horse. The doormen, the barricades, the coke, and the quaaludes. In 1977, New York City was pretty much on the skids. Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager threw the most decadent party in the history of the world. It would have gone forever except for tax evasion and jail for the owners. When it came back, under Mark Fleishmann, it was cool but not the same. Nothing ever is.
So last night, Sirius Xm recreated Studio for just one night in its original home, now the Roundabout Theater’s place of business.

“Donald Trump is a casting genius,” a TV insider tells me. “Putting these two strong Italian ladies together in a competition and having camera crews follow them around is going to be TV gold.”
But Teresa is no stranger to drama. The raven-haired spitfire has recently come under fire from her fellow Bravo castmates, including a surprising rift with the level-headed Caroline Manzo, who has always been the voice of reason on the show. But nothing we have seen will compare to the fireworks hoped for by the producers of "Celebrity Apprentice."
“Taping 'Housewives' is easy compared to taping the 'Apprentice,'" a TV insider tells me. “First of all, you have a 5:30 a.m. wake-up call every day and...

After years of branding itself as a nonscripted destination, Bravo is venturing into scripted development for the first time with two projects that share the main themes of the channel's unscripted fare: fashion, design, cuisine and real estate.
The cable network's maiden scripted efforts, "Blueprint" and "30 under 30," were unveiled Thursday at Bravo's upfront presentation in New York, where it also announced series pickups for a quartet of reality shows, including the Sarah Jessica Parker-produced "American Artist" and several projects in development, including a docu-series from Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher.
Bravo's only previous exposure to scripted programming came from a handful of off-network acquisitions, including "Six Feet Under" and "The West Wing."
The network's original scripted project, "Blueprint," hails from "Six Feet Under" alum Laurence Andries and Alloy Entertainment. It is a serialized dramedy following the lives of two best friends -- one straight, one gay -- who own...

Alt Happy Despite Losing Legal Battle
Carol Alt is claiming victory despite losing a legal battle with her ex-husband - because the end of the bitter saga has left her free to get on with her life.
Earlier this month the 47-year-old former supermodel was ordered to pay ex-spouse Ron Greschner's legal fees, after failing in her attempt to make him pay a share of an investment made during their marriage.
Alt has been left more than $30,000 (GBP20,000) out of pocket - but she's happy it's all over.
She tells the New York Daily News, "The first thing I said when I came out of the courthouse was 'It's freedom'. Regardless of what the outcome was, I understand who this man is, and it's freedom for me."
And she insists business is booming: "I'm working like crazy. I have four books out, a skin-care line. I'm shooting movies. I'm working like nuts."...
