Writer-director Claude Berri’s 1983 crime drama Tchao Pantin, also known as So Long, Stooge, is set in a world between dusk and dawn. It begins, as the cliché goes, on a dark and stormy night, with a young Arab man, Bensoussan (Richard Anconina), arriving at a gas station looking for a spark plug for his dead moped. Graveyard-shift worker Lambert (Coluche) says that he doesn’t have one, and after Benoussan politely leaves, that would seem to be the end of their association. But circumstance keeps bringing Bensoussan and Lambert together, not least because they’re nocturnal creatures who approach things with a gentle, detached irony.
Lambert may be a creature of the night, but he looks like he never adjusted to his own schedule; the bags under his eye are nearly as blue as his garage uniform, and his slicked hair and pencil mustache look more like oil stains than natural fibers.

Lyon, France — The Lumière Film Festival opened in Lyon, France, on Saturday with a grand ceremony celebrating the event’s 10th anniversary.
Institut Lumière Director Thierry Frémaux welcomed a host of French and international stars and filmmakers to the festivities at the city’s immense Halle Tony Garnier concert hall, among them Javier Bardem, Monica Bellucci, Jean Dujardin and Guillermo del Toro.
It was Jean-Paul Belmondo who drew the evening’s biggest applause and a standing ovation, however. The iconic French star was on hand for the opening night screening of Claude Lelouch’s 1988 comedy-drama “Itinerary of a Spoiled Child” in a newly restored print. Lelouch and co-star Richard Anconina were likewise in attendance.
“For our 10th anniversary we wanted to show a French film,” Frémaux said. “Lelouch was here our first year … and he’s here because he is one of the greatest filmmakers in France and the world.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Jacques Doillon's The Little Gangster (1990) is showing August 7 – September 6, 2018 in the United States as part of the series After the New Wave.He could have been a good kid. It's obvious from the way he flusters the first time he holds up a store with his father-in-law's gun. When the cashier tells him it's impossible to open the register without a sale, he frowns, grabs a bottle of shampoo from the rack, reaches into his pocket, pulls out some change, and tells her that she can take it out of the FR500 he originally demanded. It's obvious he never wanted to hurt anyone; his threats were meant more to steel himself than to actually terrify the cashier. If only he wasn't poor. If only he didn't have an alcoholic, suicidal mother or an absent, violent father. If only...
