The movie: "Zack and Miri Make a Porno"
Where you can stream it: Prime Video
The Pitch: Writer and director Kevin Smith brings his brand of crass but heartfelt comedy to a romantic story about two best friends, Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) who decide to make a porn film as a last-ditch effort to pay their rent and utility bills. While Smith usually prefers his performers to stick to the script because he writes such great dialogue, working with a bunch of actors who had come from the Judd Apatow world of improv acting allowed him to loosen up his storytelling style and let his performers go wild. The result is a heartwarming, absolutely hilarious romantic comedy that also might be one of the filthiest and most wholesome movies ever made.
As Zack and Miri try to make their movie, they meet a ragtag crew of sweet deviants who help them.

The concept for the new IFC comedy "Gigi Does It" is easy to explain, but also bizarre: A feisty Boca Raton grandmother gets a new lease on life. She also happens to be played by 37-year-old actor David Krumholtz, who normally you'd recognize from projects ranging from "Addams Family Values" to the CBS procedural "Numb3rs"... except he's playing Gigi with the help of pounds of prosthetic makeup. Read More: Review: 'The Spoils Before Dying' Is Two Pounds of Fun In a Three-Pound Bag Produced by Krumholtz, Ricky Mabe and Tim Gibbons, "Gigi Does It" was originally inspired by a project Mabe created that featured web videos of Krumholtz in character. For the series, Krumholtz depicts Gigi in a new phase of her life. Now comfortably wealthy following an inheritance from her husband, she decides to cut loose and explore the world on her terms. Becoming Gigi required four-and-a-half...

While David Krumholtz’s most prominent television role to date has been in the CBS show Numb3rs, the performer has also displayed an adeptness in comedic roles, from movies such as Superbad to guest appearances on Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23 and The League, as well as a leading role in the short-lived sitcom Partners. Krumholtz’s next project will see him dive into comedic waters once again, as IFC has given a straight-to-series order for his new show, titled Gigi’s Bucket List.
The first season will consist of eight episodes, each episode being half an hour long, and will make its premiere on IFC later in the year. Krumholtz is slated to play the titular character, a 76 year old woman named Gertrude Rotblum, aka Gigi, who comes across a secret stash of millions and decides to use it to gain experiences she missedo out on previously.

David Krumholtz is poised to do a real number on us, playing a 72-year-old Jewish grandmother in an IFC pilot.
IFC announced on Wednesday that it has commissioned a presentation (i.e. a whittled-down pilot) for Gigi’s Bucket List, which follows the titular septuagenarian from Boca Raton, Fla. as she pursues everything she deprived herself of throughout her life, after discovering millions in her dead husband’s bank account.

Between films like The Big Ask to 10 Things I Hate About You and television’s long-running series, Numb3rs, chances are you’ve seen a David Krumholtz joint. His latest project has him dressing in drag and talking about cumulus clouds, which is indeed a 180 from Bernard the elf.

“The Wild Hunt” is a Canadian production from 2009, which having enjoyed a successful and award winning run at festivals now arrives on region 2 DVD. Marking the debut of writer director Alexandre Franchi, the film is set in the world of LARPing, or for the uninitiated (this reviewer included), Live Action Role Playing, which basically involves people dressing up as fantasy characters and running around in the woods with rubber weapons. Having been compared to “Lord of the Flies”, the film revolves around the premise of LARPers taking things too far, leading to violent and tragic consequences. The plot kicks off with a young guy called Erik Magnusson (Ricky Mabe, “Trailer Park of Terror”) falling out with his girlfriend Evelyn (Tiio Horn, “The Theatre Bizarre”) over her leaving for a weekend to join in a Larp game with his older brother Bjorn (Mark A. Krupa, “The Last Templar”). After sulking for a while,...

As humans we are in constant conflict with ourselves.
We are constantly fighting against the social confines we find ourselves in (i.e. having a job, paying rent, monogamy) and our greater animal instincts, those supposed primal urges that we have been taught to so neatly oppress. This is exactly where humor and terror collide in Alexandre Franchi's The Wild Hunt, a movie that continually teases its audience as to where our social boundaries are drawn.
Based in and around the world of Larp, The Wild Hunt examines the blurred lines that occur when a scruffy hipster named Erik (Ricky Mabe) crashes a weekend long event in hopes of retrieving his girlfriend, Lyn(Tiio Horn), who's been distancing herself from Erik for some time. Also at the weekend...

For those of you looking for a good time this Thursday night (June 16), MTV has got you covered with the latest addition to our slate of original programming, the teen thriller, "The Truth Below." The film revolves around four high school friends, played by Gillian Zinser, Ricky Mabe, Reid Ewing and Nick Thurston, who while driving home from a spring break ski trip, suddenly find themselves in a life-or-death situation.
"'The Truth Below' is a movie about these four kids, three of which are right here," Nick Thurston told MTV News when the three actors stopped by our west coast studio. "We're on a ski trip, on our way back home and end up crashing into a mountain side and getting covered up with a whole bunch of snow in an avalanche. It's about what happens in the car after we all realize we're stuck down there," he explained.

Once again, Peepers, a film I saw on Sunday at the Just for Laughs Film Festival, is a proof that in Canadian cinema, there are no taboo topics. As a matter of fact, Peepers adds itself to the growing list of smartly written Canadian comedies that deal with sexual desire.
A group of peeping toms led by Steve Sherman (Joe Cobden), a loser who lives in his mom's basement, enjoys taking Montreal's chilly rooftops during the night. Through the unshuttered windows, they want to have a glimpse at a “hottie hookup,” a “panty party” or a “big booty buffet”. However, the peeping toms' life is about to change when Annette Fulvish (Janine Theriault), an academic interested by "male gaze", enters the domain of peeping, which is dominated by men.
At the same time, some members in the group begin to question their interest for peeping. Bobby (Ricky Mabe), the youngest member of the group,...

As usual, Montreal's Just for Laughs Film Festival has two Canadian films in store and they both come from the province of Quebec. The one we're going to talk is called Peepers, a comedy that follows three peeping toms from Montreal.
Led by the eagle-eyed Steve Sherman (Joe Cobden), a rag-tag group of Peepers take to Montreal’s chilly rooftops under cover of night. They’re on the prowl for the perfect peep—desperate to glimpse a “hottie hookup,” a “panty party” or a “big booty buffet” through unshuttered windows.
But their lives are about to change. Enter Annette Fulvish (Janine Theriault), a brazen academic who turns the tables by setting her sights on the Peepers themselves. Soon it’s a battle royale for rooftop supremacy—will these die-hard obsessives manage to defend their turf, or will Peeping as they know it never be the same?

It's been a while since we've heard anything about Syfy's upcoming "Being Human" re-imagining (or whatever they're calling it these days), but it looks like we know who'll be playing two thirds of the threesome made up of a ghost, vampire, and werewolf. Read on for the details.
According to The Ausiello Files on EW.com, multiple sources are confirming that Sam Witwer ("Smallville") will be portraying vampire Aidan while Meaghan Rath ("The Assistants") has signed on to play ghost Molly. That just leaves werewolf Josh, and according to Ausiello Sam Huntington (Dylan Dog: Dead of Night) is currently in talks for the role, for which Ricky Mabe and Aaron Ashmore both previously tested.

Chicago – In a summer where even the most mainstream sect of the moviegoing public has begun turning its back on lazy mass-marketed mediocrity, it’s especially refreshing to be faced with the 17th Annual Chicago Underground Film Festival. The edginess, unpredictability, and even sporadic clumsiness of this festival’s offerings sharply contrast with the slick, routine pictures that often pass for “independent” filmmaking these days.
The films at Cuff are always exhilaratingly alive and defiantly uncommercial. This year’s festival offers a typically diverse smorgasbord of independent, experimental and documentary features, including several titles that are already gaining buzz as potential cult classics. Filmmakers and film lovers will unite at The Gene Siskel Film Center during the festival’s week-long run, from June 24th to the 28th, with repeat screenings continuing through July 1st. Yesterday, The Cultural Post learnt through Twitter that the teaser for the upcoming feature film Peepers is already online.
While the film's director is Seth W. Owen, the story was created by the imagination of Automatic Vaudeville, a Canadian comic trio made of Owen, Mark Slutsky and Daniel Perlmutter.
The story follows a group of voyeurs - or "peepers" (Joe Cobden, Paul Spence and Howard Bilerman) - who like to sneak across rooftops with binoculars at night. Moreover, they have an eye on women. However, an university student (Janine Theriault) plans to give to the "peepers" a taste of their own game. With a plot like that, needless to say that the film's story has been compared to Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window.
Besides, the film also stars Jessica Paré, Ricky Mabe and Amy Sobol.
Finally, a theatrical release date has yet to be announced for this comedy that was shot in Montreal.
After a run at the latest Toronto International Film Festival and the Festival du nouveau cinéma, Alexandre Franchi's anticipated debut feature The Wild Hunt will hit Canada's theatres on April 9, 2010. However, note that it will only be a limited release.
This independent film was made on a shoestring budget and Franchi co-wrote the script with Mark Antony Krupa.
The film was shot in Montreal and Biccoline, Québec. It brings us into the world of larpers, people who participate in a live role playing game that takes place in the Middle Age (sort of). Evelynn (Kaniehtiio Horn) leaves Montreal for a while just to take place in this kind of make-believe game. Obviously, Erik (Ricky Mabe), her boyfriend, feels that she's disconnected from him and would like to talk her out of the game. Besides, as Evelynn tries to get out of the game, the larpers will do what they...

Some of you have probably seen The Trotsky during the last Toronto International Film Festival, Festival du nouveau cinéma or Kingston Canadian Film Festival. The wait will almost be over, because The Trotsky will hit Canadian theatres on May 14. Besides, the poster and the trailer of this comedy from Jacob Tierney have been online since a few days.
The four students in the front from left to right: Ricky Mabe, Kaniehtiio Horn, Jesse Camacho and Tommie-Amber Pirie.Synopsis:
Leon Bronstein (Jay Baruchel), a teenager from a wealthy family, infuriated his father (Saul Rubinek), because he organized a strike at the family's clothing factory. Moreover, Leon did that because he firmly believes he's the reincarnation of Leon Trotsky, a Russian communist revolutionary. As a punishment, Leon gets sent to a public school. Once there, Leon will try to unionize the students in order to live his faith to its fullest.

Quickcard Review
The Wild Hunt
Directed by: Alexandre Franchi
Cast: Mark A. Krupa, Tilo Horn, Ricky Mabe
Running Time: 1 hr 35 min
Rating: unrated
Complete Coverage – 33rd Portland International Film Festival
Plot: A live action role-playing event goes out of whack after being infiltrated by Erik, a guy looking for his girlfriend. His entrance leads to a series of events that send the game spiraling down an unexpected and dangerous track.
Who’S It For? You don’t have to know anything about role playing to enjoy this film. I don’t and I still found it fascinating.
Overall
It’s not often that I see something new in a movie, plot wise. Though the idea of adults medieval role playing isn’t new to film, Role Models dealt with it in a comedic way, Franchi explores the emotional side. Like a movie about actors acting, the characters in The Wild Hunt...

A forest. It’s dark. Men circle a fire and chant a call to the gods of times past. This is a ritual that opens a door to something dark within the soul. A battle is brewing between the Celts and the Vikings and the legendary “wild hunt” will mark the beginning of the end, the frenzied hunt before the final battle.
The joy of Alexandre Franchi’s The Wild Hunt is that it’s not simply a story of a legendary war but also a tale of doomed romance. Really, Franchi’s film manages to be a lot of things. Usually, when a film stretches itself this wide, something goes wrong: you lose focus, the story gets unwieldy and hard to follow but Franchi and co-writer Mark Antony Krupa...

The Slamdance Film Festival begins in two weeks and many of the films are looming darkly. The Wild Hunt, from Darclight Entertainment, blurs genres, but centrally the film is one of lost love and the danger of blurring reality with fantasy. Much of The Wild Hunt takes place during a medieval re-enactment in which newcomer Erik (Ricky Mabe) finds the egos of the players out-of-control. This flick also stars Kyle Gatehouse (Killer Wave), Trevor Hayes (The Dead Zone), and Mark Antony Krupa (Shake Hands with the Devil) and a trailer is below. Watch the theatrical clip till the end when The Wild Hunt reveals its true horrific colours.
A synopsis for The Wild Hunt here:
"A modern medieval saga, The Wild Hunt tells the story of Erik Magnusson, a young man who decides to follow his estranged girlfriend Evelyn into a medieval re-enactment game when he discovers that she has...

Slamdance, which runs concurrently with Park City’s Sundance Film Festival, has announced its 2010 line-up, and there are several choices that look to make genre fans sit up and take notice.
Variety provided the names of the ten narrative and eight documentary feature films that are, in the spirit of the fest’s motto, “by filmmakers, for filmmakers.” Although not all of them are horror related, in the interest of keeping you guys fully informed on all the latest indie happenings (and because some of the docs just sound so damn interesting with topics like William Burroughs and Bolivian women wrestlers!), the full list follows:
Narrative Competition:
Cummings Farm (Andrew Drazek) - Comedy about three couples who try group sex at a lakeside strawberry farm, naively hoping it will lead to enlightenment; with Laura Silverman.
Drones (Amber Benson & Adam Busch) - A man discovers a universal threat to his life,...

What's that? You can't wait to hear about the Irish post apocalyptic film One Hundred Mornings? Well you don't have to because we already have a review of it right here! Our own Alan Maxwell called it an "uncomfortably realistic vision of the breakdown of society." Yeah, it's good.
So continuing, part of the Slamdance lineup has been announced and it's got quite a few films we've featured.
Want something horrible in the forest? How about YellowBrickRoad?
Or maybe some William Burroughs? How about William S Burroughs: A Man Within?
Yup, the lineup for one of my favorite festivals is looking mighty fine as usual, and we'll be bringing you more shortly.
Partial lineup after the break!

[Our thanks to Andrew David Long for the following review.]
Alexandre Franchi just might be a genius, and his first feature shows the same lyric creativity and the same commitment to themes of imagination he displayed in his stellar collection of short films (Fata Morgana, Troll Concerto, etc.), all while suggesting - contrary to his earlier works - that reality must eventually destroy fantasy.
Viking reenactment enthusiast Bjorn (Mark Antony Krupa reveling in the chance to go berserk on camera) has abandoned his brother Erik (Ricky Mabe, also appearing in The Trotsky at Whistler this year) and ailing father in order to live in his fantasy world. When Erik's prevaricating girlfriend Lynn (Kaniehtiio Horn, again with The Trotsky) is lured to the camp of Celtic Shaman Murtagh (Trevor Hayes) Erik ventures into the woods to try to get her back. There are, of course, consequences to interfering with someone else's fantasy: when The Wild Hunt begins its turn to the...

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0 Chicago – The inevitable merging of the Judd Apatow-verse and the View Askew-verse headed by Kevin Smith happened in the underrated and under-seen “Zack and Miri Make a Porno,” new on Blu-Ray this week and joined by a Special Edition release of “Clerks II”.
Smith’s best film since “Chasing Amy” comes home to Blu-Ray this week in a release that gets the job done but will likely leave Smith fans a little disappointed. Oddly enough, The Weinstein Company also released “Clerks II” on Blu-Ray this week in a much more impressive 2-disc special edition, proving that the quality of the movie and the quality of the Blu-Ray aren’t always a perfect match.

Coming closer to its theatrical release, "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" brings forward two more promotional videos, a new trailer and a fresh clip. While the new trailer shows many footage that are similar to the previously released trailer with differences in orders and gives out few of new snippets, the red band clip entitled "1 Up" displays an entirely never-before-seen footage.
Opened with a promotional commentary from the filmmaker Kevin Smith himself about the movie, the clip presents the time Zack attends his high school reunion and meets Roxanne, his Spanish classmate for four years. While Zack rambles around the fact that nobody remembers him, Roxanne fumes over her husband hitting on a cheerleader. Seeing it as an opportunity to have fun, Zack then offers an interesting idea for pay back.

The Weinstein Company comedy "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" has let out another preview inside the movie that collaborates filmmaker Kevin Smith and comedian Seth Rogen through a brand new trailer. While containing similar footages to previous red band trailer, this new video takes viewers to more refined conversations among the characters.
On other "Make a Porno" news, it has been reported that the new poster of the R-rated comedy has been banned by MPAA due to its sexual reference. Commenting on the banning of the poster which can be seen on the news photo, Smith told Entertainment Weekly, "When you've got the word 'porno' in the title, naturally, the marketing materials are gonna be scrutinized more closely by the MPAA. I understand they've got a job to do, but c'mon...this image isn't that dirty; they're both fully clad."

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com Two years ago the big winner to come out of Comic Con was Warner Bros. and 300. Following its massive presence it went on to gross $210 million. A tally that could not have been matched had it not been for the massive buzz following a hard R-rated preview reel that left audiences asking to see it over and over again. Last year it was Paramount's turn with Iron Man. Many, such as myself, were hesitant to believe a metal suit of armor could fly. We were proven wrong and the preview reel presented by Jon Favreau blew us all away and then went on to earn $314 million at the box-office, which is a highly impressive number for a non-Spider-Man/Superman/Batman superhero. So, the big question is what was this year's big hit? I am sure some of you guessed it by the headline, but let's take...

Film review:'Little Men'
Unlike Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women", which has been rendered successfully three times by Hollywood (most recently in 1994 with Winona Ryder as Jo), the 1871 sequel "Little Men" has not fared well. The 1935 and 1940 versions are not considered major works, and the current Legacy release is a lonely, family-classic orphan in a cruel, cold boxoffice world.
Faithful to the book, screenwriter Mark Evan Schwartz ("Star Quest") and Montreal-based director Rodney Gibbons (a former director of photography, from "Pinball Summer" to "Screamers") re-create the early 1870s with a good eye for detail and casting, but it's hard to imagine today's computer-age kids flocking to such a straightforward, wholesome tale with gentle humor and many sensible, constructive lessons about life.
Mariel Hemingway is inspired casting as the grown-up Jo, who is married to professor Fritz Bhaer (Chris Sarandon). Together they run a boys boarding school in their large home, with formal classes, fun group activities and strict rules.
The Bhaers are rational and tolerant. When homeless Nat (Michael Caloz) is brought into the warm, communal environment, he's immediately grateful but must learn not to lie. Fritz's unusual form of punishment, making Nat inflict pain, has the desired effect, but the scene is a bit intense for younger viewers.
With new buddies such as egg-gathering Tommy Bangs (Ricky Mabe) and home run-hitting Nan Harding (Gabrielle Boni), Nat never forgets about his former partner in crime Dan Ben Cook), and the little tough guy keeps coming back. Indeed, Dan makes life interesting and more dangerous for all of them, introducing the boys to gambling and fighting and almost burning down the house.
Saving Dan from himself and protecting everyone else from his dark impulses becomes the thrust of the story, and the two adults have plenty of other worries, including everyday finances and what's to become of an untamable horse that's been running wild in a corral since Dan arrived.
While most of the film's humanistic agenda goes down easily enough, Dan tames the bucking horse in a laughable conclusion. The friendly, upbeat narration is read by Kathleen Fee.
Caloz and Cook are little scene-stealers, particularly the latter in his Artful Dodger costume. From the crowded streets of Boston to the Bhaers' cozy lair, "Louisa May Alcott's Little Men" is visually nourishing thanks to Georges Archambault's fine cinematography and Donna Noonan's solid production design.
