San Francisco, June 28 (Ians) Google is reportedly laying off employees from its navigation and mapping company Waze, as it aims to merge mapping products.
The tech giant is moving Waze over to Google’s ads system which means there will be job cuts at Waze in “sales, marketing, operations and analytics,” reports CNBC.
The report cited an email by Chris Phillips, VP and Gm of Google’s Geo unit, which read that the company hopes to “create a more scalable and optimised Waze Ads product”.
Waze has more than 500 employees and it was not clear how many of those will lose jobs.
“We have decided to transition Waze’s ads monetisation to be managed by the Global Business Organisation (Gbo), similar to Google Maps,” Phillips wrote in the email.
“Unfortunately, this will result in a reduction of Waze Ads monetisation-focused roles in sales, marketing, operations and analytics,” the email noted.

Backstreets, the respected Bruce Springsteen fanzine, is calling it quits to protest the “dynamic pricing” that has led to sky-high concert ticket costs.
“After 43 years of publishing in one form or another, by fans for fans of Bruce Springsteen, it’s with mixed emotions that we announce Backstreets has reached the end of the road,” publisher and editor-in-chief Christopher Phillips wrote in an editorial.
Backstreets began publishing in 1980, and became a go-to resource for insider information on The Boss and his plans. It had an international circulation and was fan-run.
“If you read the editorial Backstreets published last summer in the aftermath of the U.S. ticket sales, you have a sense of where our heads and hearts have been: dispirited, downhearted, and, yes, disillusioned. It’s not a feeling we’re at all accustomed to while anticipating a new Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band tour,” Phillips wrote.

For the past four decades, Backstreets Magazine has devoted itself entirely to the world of Bruce Springsteen. Longtime editor and superfan Christopher Phillips and his team treat every new album, archival release, and concert as joyous affairs. But on July 24, days after Springsteen’s long-awaited E Street Band tour went on sale and stunned fans who came across tickets costing upwards of 5,000, Phillips and company found themselves in the unusual position of writing a deeply critical editorial about their hero.

Hi there, Face here! Chances are, if you're a '90s kid who grew up on Nick Jr., you didn't just read that sentence, but you also heard it. Because, when you were sick at home and curled up on the couch, it was that voice of Nickelodeon's animated host who announced your favorite shows like Blue's Clues, Gullah Gullah Island, Little Bear, Allegra's Window and Eureeka's Castle. (And yes, reading that lineup has us feeling nostalgic Af too.) But did you ever stop and think about putting a name to, well, the Face? We did. And we found Chris Phillips, who has been lending his voice to Nickelodeon since 1994. (Though the...

Steve Vidler’s 2019 film Standing Up For Sunny, which centred on a comedian with cerebral palsy, ignited in the director a passion for bringing stories of people with disability to screen, driving forward his next project, Always & Everywhere.
The feature, written by Chris Phillips, is inspired by a life-changing event from her childhood and the ‘magical healing qualities’ of Sydney’s Currawong Beach.
The script has been through various different options since 2005 (under the title Six Weeks in Heaven), but Vidler’s suggestion to Phillips, his partner in Sidekick Pictures, that the young main character be reworked to have Williams Syndrome, has given it new momentum.
The film centres on Celeste, a 9-year-old girl whose quirky expressiveness, enthusiasm and lack of social boundaries makes her an outcast. When her beloved teen brother Hal is diagnosed with a terminal illness, Celeste vows to help him achieve three rites-of-passage wishes. So when...

The story of how Jon Landau saw Bruce Springsteen play at Cambridge, Massachusetts’ Harvard Square Theater on May 9th, 1974 and then declared him “rock and roll future” in Boston’s Real Paper, creating a tidal wave of hype that crested with the release of Born to Run the following year, has been told many times. What’s far less known is that a young photographer named Barry Schneier was perched near the stage that night, snapping gorgeous photographs of the early show and the late show along with the soundcheck.

Two decades ago, Pandora launched the Music Genome Project, a.k.a. the backbone of its Internet radio service, and changed music discovery forever. No longer did fans sift through clunky physical or digital record stores to find new artists to love; Pandora’s meticulous recommendation engine served that all up effortlessly to them. Now, the music company — which has been through tough times of late, reorganizing and figuring out a fresh identity after swinging back from the cusp of bankruptcy — wants to do the same for podcasts.

This month, FX aired something insane and magic and impossible to describe. It came courtesy of a show you are likely not watching – unless you’re a diehard fan of Denis Leary and/or single-camera comedies about rock music. It stars an artist whose contributions to film, television and theater are prolific and vast, who performs an homage to Broadway’s most game-changing musical of the last several decades.
