“Nickel Boys,” RaMell Ross’s adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2019 novel, opened New York Film Festival’s 62nd edition on Friday night. The historical drama, which received rave reviews out of Telluride in September, marks the Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker’s narrative debut.
On a muggy, overcast evening in the Upper West Side, Ross and the film’s stars — including Ethan Herisse, Brandon Wilson, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and Daveed Diggs — walked the carpet at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall before introducing the film to the nearly-packed theater.
“You can feel the energy, it’s like Michael Jordan is in the arena,” Ross told Variety ahead of the screening. “It feels like something crazy is gonna happen in there.”
“Emotional” might be a more apt descriptor of the screening experience. The two-and-a-half-hour film follows two Black teenagers who become wards of a barbaric juvenile reformatory in Jim Crow-era Florida. Herisse...

I’m gonna give you to the count of ten to get your ugly, yella, no-good keister into a theater with Macaulay Culkin. Sure, it’s barely after Labor Day but that means it’s basically Halloween. And if Halloween is around the corner then it’s only a matter of time before Christmas decorations are on shelves. With that, it’s fair game to start thinking about our favorite holiday movies. The event – hosted by Standing Ovations Live – is titled “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin”, with the Home Alone star sitting down to give fans insight into his on-set experiences and share some of his favorite behind-the-scenes stories. Those who pay a premium price – which could run you around $250 per...

The Starz series follows the story of a group of out-of-work actors in Los Angeles who are trying to earn a living by working in a catering company and still hoping to make it big in the industry. Party Down stars Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Lizzy Caplan, Ryan Hansen, Martin Starr, Jane Lynch, and Megan Mullally. One of Tim Burton's first professional gigs after his stint at the California Institute of Arts was working as an animator, storyboard artist, and graphic designer at Disney. Burton was born and raised in Burbank, California, which is where Disney's offices are located, so he more or less grew up in the company's shadow. He worked at the Mouse House for a few years in the early '80s, working on films like "The Fox and the Hound," "Tron," and "The Black Cauldron." It should be noted that this was a notoriously bad time for Disney, and the financial failure of the ultra-ambitious and very expensive "Cauldron" (it cost $44 million) led to an open conversation about Disney shutting down its animation department.
Of course, while Disney was floundering financially, they were freer to experiment artistically. I maintain that Disney's most interesting movies came at a time when their kiddie-flick successes didn't define them.

Home Alone Star Recalls One "Wild" Night with Donald Trump After Shooting Sequel - Main Image
Home Alone 2 star shares the "wild" night he had with Donald Trump, the former US President, after filming.
The Home Alone franchise will always be that classic '90s comedy flick that sparks nostalgia on Christmas day. However, what makes it stand out from the rest is because of one particular cameo from Donald Trump in the sequel.
Before we get into that though, here's how Trump made it into Home Alone 2.
Explaining That Donald Trump Cameo in Home Alone 2
When Kevin McCallister (played by Macaulay Culkin) was asking for directions to go into The Plaza Hotel in the sequel, he ran into Donald Trump, who owned the establishment in real life at the time.
While that would have explained the cameo, helmer Chris Columbus said it wasn't that simple.

Cinema fans – and burglars – alert: the home made famous by 1990 film Home Alone is on the market, with a sale price of $5.25m (£4.1m).

Hollywood actor, artist, director, and screenwriter Daniel Stern has bagged a ton of hilariously iconic roles in comedies throughout his career and has managed to land a spectacular performance in nearly every single one of them. As fans must have already understood after watching him in the Home Alone film series, he is immensely dedicated to his work to the core.

That said, this tremendous commitment once almost had him losing his life while working on his comedy-action from 1981, Honky Tonk Freeway. And, ironically enough, Stern didn’t risk his life this badly while shooting an action scene, but rather, this happened while he was shooting a simple scene, for he accidentally consumed real drugs on set instead of using substitutes!

Macaulay Culkin, the actor who reached extraordinary heights of fame and success with his tremendous portrayal of the genius Kevin McCallister in his version of the Home Alone saga, actually shared a rather peculiar relationship with Michael Jackson in the eyes of the public. That being said, most fans may not know that this friendship actually started with a phone call.

As Culkin himself admitted it, the pair probably wouldn’t have shared the kind of close relationship they did had it not been for one “weird, random” call that the child actor received from the now-deceased King of Pop. And, although this may sound similar to the rumors surrounding Jackson’s alleged abuse of youngsters, that’s hardly the case, and Culkin stands as a witness to this claim.

For the second time in just under six months, a key piece of the Home Alone film franchise is on the market.
On Friday, the iconic Home Alone house from the first film hit the market. The Winnetka, Illinois home carries a $5.25 million price tag.
Last December, the lux townhouse featured in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York went on sale for a mere $6.7 million. That home is located on Manhattan’s ritzy Upper West Side at 51 West 95th Street, between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue.
The Winnetka home was fully renovated and expanded in 2018. But the owners kept the front of the stately brick crib exactly the same as depicted in the 1990 film, which starred Macaulay Culkin, Catherine O’Hara, Joe Pesci, and Daniel Stern.
The five-bedroom, six-bathroom house also has a movie theater and a sports court boasting a true 3-point line.

Turning into a cultural phenomenon following its release in 1990, the Home Alone franchise thereafter became the universal theme for the holiday season. Further, appearing in memes and other forms of media, the franchise became a huge box-office success. And certainly, the credit goes to its iconic cast, including Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, and Daniel Stern.

Writing and directing a short is a potential passageway to creating a full-length feature film.
Aspiring directors use this medium to create a proof of concept on a small budget that can go on to win on the short film festival circuit and be picked up by investors, leading to larger projects and paving the way to a career in Hollywood.
Shorts are not uncommon to be made as proof of concept for a feature film, especially by first-time directors. Multiple Oscar-nominated actor Bradley Cooper, for example, had to prove to the studio heads that he was capable of directing A Star Is Born, also starring Lady Gaga, in 2019 by creating a short.

Apple TV+ isn’t done exploring the depths of space.
The streamer has renewed its drama series For All Mankind for Season 5. Additionally, Apple TV+ has given the green light to a spinoff series titled Star City, also from creators Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi.
Apple is billing Star City is “a propulsive paranoid thriller” which will explore a key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race — when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, it will explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward.
“Our fascination with the Soviet space program has grown with every season of For All Mankind,” Wolpert and Nedivi said in a statement.

Directors are lining up left and right each month to share their favorite films from the TCM lineup, and the latest is Jason Reitman. Winning an Oscar by making us laugh. What a way to make a living!
What makes a performance “Oscar-worthy”? Many often leap to sustained emotional investment or comprehensively immersive transformations as the benchmark for success at the Academy Awards. But if the Oscars celebrate the performances that elicit the strongest emotional responses then why do show-stopping comedic performances so often receive the cold-shoulder? There is a relatively easy answer to this question found within the progression of American film across the past half-century. Cinema throughout the 1930s, 40s, and 50s saw the proliferation of genre filmmaking, with behemoths like the musical, western, epic, and comedy reigning supreme. During these decades, all of these styles saw success both popularly as cherished classics amongst the general public, and prestigiously as consistent award show champions.

The 1980s was a seminal period in the development of what we now define as the action movie. This was the decade that cemented the statuses of both Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the muscle-bound box office behemoths eating the competition for breakfast. Having emerged off the back of critically acclaimed efforts like Rocky and The Terminator, the years that followed saw the pair hone their greased-up on-screen personas to fine effect.
It wasn’t all about the muscles though. The 1980s also ushered in the era of the everyman action star with Bruce Willis in Die Hard and Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop opting for brains over brawn and reaping the benefits in multiplexes far and wide as a result. While Hollywood basked in the glory of a new generation of leading men, in the Far East, Jackie Chan was taking action movie physicality to a whole...

“I still get residuals from ‘Home Alone 2’ because I sang in the chorus,” Kate said, referencing the scene where Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McAllister ruins a school Christmas pageant.
“I’m in that chorus, and then I get 10 cents every once in a while.”
Joey Lawrence knows the feeling.
“Sometimes I’ll get, like, 2 cents and I’m like, ‘Wait. Doesn’t the envelope and paper cost more?’”

John Hughes was the patron saint of adolescents who found great success with a series of hit comedies, most of them centering around the plight of teenagers. Yet how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films as both a writer and director, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1950, Hughes first came to the attention of Hollywood as a writer after penning “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983) and “Mr. Mom” (1983). That financially successful one-two punch landed him his first directing gig: “Sixteen Candles” (1984). A tender coming-of-age story about a teenage girl (Molly Ringwald) suffering one indignity after another on her sweet sixteen firmly established him as the premiere helmer of adolescent comedies, leading to “The Breakfast Club” (1985), “Weird Science” (1985), and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986).
Yet Hughes also excelled at entertainments outside the classroom, including the road trip farce “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” (1987), starring...

2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the creature feature C.H.U.D. (watch it Here), which is best remembered for its title – which stands for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers – and for its cast, which included John Heard, Daniel Stern, Christopher Curry, and Kim Griest, with appearances by Jon Polito, Jay Thomas, and John Goodman. To celebrate C.H.U.D.‘s big anniversary, the folks at Dread Central decided to ask Goodman about the film – and found that he was quite happy to reminisce about his experience working with the cannibalistic humanoids!
Goodman said, “I am definitely in C.H.U.D. I’m from St. Louis and I moved to New York in ’75 to do theater and I wanted to do film. I knew if I didn’t go and try to do films, I would kick myself for the rest of my life. C.H.U.D. was made by a lot of the guys I was...

You know what they say about Old Man Marley, the South Bend Shovel Slayer? Back in ’58, he murdered his whole family and half the people on a suburban Chicago block with a snow shovel. He’s been hiding out there ever since, disguising the remains of his misdeeds by turning victims to mummies, and using the dust off their bones to salt our streets.
That’s what the kids in the McCallister house tell each other every cold December night when the lonely stranger played by Roberts Blossom appears outside their window. It’s of course a lie, but the truth was originally a lot more enigmatic in the early drafts of the Home Alone screenplay penned by John Hughes, who was a maestro of family and youth entertainment during the 1980s and early ‘90s.
At its inception, Home Alone was both a departure and a return to the well for Hughes.

A burning question surrounding the 1990 Christmas classic “Home Alone” has finally been answered by economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Just how rich is the McCallister family? It’s a question The New York Times now has an answer to as the Federal Reserves has determined Kevin MCallister’s family is in the one percent of Chicago residents based on the value of their home.
Per The Times: “In 1990, the house was affordable only for the top 1 percent of Chicago household incomes, and that would still be the case today, according to economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago…the home would have been affordable to a household with an income of $305,000 in 1990.”
So there you have it. Peter (John Heard) and Kate McCallister (Catherine O’Hara) would’ve been earning at least $305,000 annually in 1990 to afford the house, which is located on the North shore of Chicago.

In many ways, Chris Columbus and John Hughes made the most successful Christmas movie of all time with Home Alone. Sure, there are other movies that might rank high in the pantheon for some, but in terms of box office alone, this was a juggernaut, grossing $476 million in 1990, which, adjusted for inflation, is about $1.1 Billion in 2023. No other Christmas movie comes close to that number, and that’s not even counting how much money it made on home video, where it was one of the biggest-selling titles of all time, plus all its plays on cable, streaming and more.
Yet, it’s also a movie that would never be made now, with the film climaxing with Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McCallister laying a series of traps for Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern’s Harry and Marv that would likely put real men in their graves. Crazy as it sounds, Home Alone...

Everyone’s favourite Sticky Bandit, Daniel Stern, was the original choice for directing Jim Carrey comedy Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, but the actor has now shared why he turned it down.
Home Alone is a staple Christmas watch in most households, but did you know that one of the actors was the original director for Ace Ventura: Pet Detective?
That’s right. Daniel Stern, who played Marv in the first two Home Alone films, has recently revealed in an interview with Comicbook.com that he was in line to direct the Jim Carrey comedy but turned it down. Merry Christmas, you filthy animals. The time has come for your annual “Home Alone” marathon — but where exactly are those films calling home this holiday season?
In fairness, there are a lot of them to keep track of. Though the series ended in the hearts of most fans with “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” there were actually four more films that came after it. But, only the first two center on Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin), Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern). After that, new kids and new thieves take the reins.
The good news is, you can find all the “Home Alone” films in one place this year. But, you can also find them elsewhere, if you want to spend some money.
Where can I watch the “Home Alone” movies for free on streaming?
This holiday season, “Home Alone” and its many sequels are available to stream on Disney+.

No current drama on television tries to cover as much ground, literally or figuratively, as For All Mankind. The fourth season of the Apple TV+ drama — set in an alternate version of history where the Soviets beat America to the moon, triggering a never-ending space race — splits its time between Houston, Moscow, and Mars. It is, at various points, a science-fiction epic, a political potboiler, a spy-thriller, and a workplace drama where one of the branch offices happens to be on the hostile surface of another planet.

While many of our favorite sci-fi shows seem to either be on hold or suddenly canceled, Apple TV+’s For All Mankind shows no sign of stopping. The alternate history show is blasting off with its fourth season on the streamer this November and, as always, the premiere is the most exciting part of the series’ return for those who are curious to see where all the characters have ended up after the traditional massive time jump.
The season four opening montage sets the stage for a new era, and clears away anything surplus to requirements. Unfortunately, that means that we’ve likely seen the last of Jodi Balfour’s Ellen Wilson for a while, as we’re informed that she and Bush won re-election, but the Democrats then swept to victory four years later with President Al Gore now in charge of the country.
