Pedro Pascal has always been an extremely prolific actor, and his track record is nothing short of impressive — but he only received real-real recognition after 2019’s The Mandalorian. This instant classic Star Wars TV show saw Pascal become a reluctant father figure for a teenage girl he’d come across in a dangerous world…
But we bet the actor was having severe deja vu while filming it, because by then, he had already done the same thing in an overlooked 2018 sci-fi Western!
Pascal Feels Natural in Father Figure Roles
We’re not even joking: Pedro Pascal’s “reluctant father” archetype started in his 2018 movie Prospect — a low-budget sci-fi drama that didn’t get the recognition it deserved. In Prospect, his character also finds himself in a hostile environment and suddenly has to take care of a teenage girl he stumbles upon out in the wilderness. Fun, isn’t it?

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has won a competitive auction and sealed a high-six figure outright purchase of The Dwelling, an unpublished short story by Aaron Jayh. Michael B. Jordan and Liz Raposo’s Outlier Society are attached to produce. Jordan is potentially starring.
Adapting the mind-bending story will be Aaron Guzikowski, the scribe best known for Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners and Apple TV’s Raised by Wolves. Jordan and Raposo will produce with Ground Control’s Scott Glassgold.
Several studios bid and put together talent alignments, but it came down to Amazon and Netflix, sources said.
The Dwelling tells the story of a newly divorced father who discovers a house buried in his backyard. He is a former all pro football player trying to ease into retirement, and the hits he took on the field starts to make him unsure what is real and imagined, as things begin to go awry.

Something very special is coming from the creators of Prospect (review). Directors Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell are kickstarting one of the coolest looking new cinematic universes via an Nft drop and if you are not convinced by all the amazing and meticulously detailed material and thoughtful backstory they've created for it, I don't know what to tell you.
The world they are created looks to be set within the same one as Prospect, one owing to the western tradition of lawlessness and populated by miners, engineers, bounty hunters, trappers and mercenaries.

Whoaaaa! This looks awesome. There's a badass new project in the works from the two talented filmmakers Zeek Earl & Chris Caldwell, best known for turning their short into a feature film called Prospect. Their latest idea is called The Fringe, and it's essentially a new "sci-fi, cinematic universe" set in space following scavengers or freelancers called Drifters: miners, engineers, bounty hunters, trappers, mercenaries, gastrotechs. They've decided to dip into NFTs to try "new model of film financing that will put full creative control back into the hands of the film's artistic team." The Nft collection will be comprised of in-world characters called Drifters. "The Nft project will be an immersive narrative experience that will introduce fans to the universe in novel ways, creating a portal into the world’s lore via the art and other integrated mediums like an in-world compendium." Sounds cool. There's a teaser out for The...

"Some of us have the proclivity for greatness, while others do not." Have you visited this planet yet? A new official trailer has debuted for an underrated indie sci-fi film titled Prospect, which originally premiered at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival and opened in theaters later that year. It's now available on Netflix - which is why they're kicking off some new promotion. This excellent little sci-fi set on a far away moon is a feature adaptation of a short film made by Zeek Earl & Chris Caldwell in 2014 (watch here). The film is about a teen girl and her father who travel to a remote moon on the hunt for elusive riches. They discover others hiding in the moon's toxic forest and their visit quickly devolves into a desperate fight to escape. Jay Duplass and Sophie Thatcher star, with a cast including Pedro Pascal (Mando!), Andre Royo, Sheila Vand, and Anwan Glover.

We’ve just hit November, and that means a whole new month of material for Netflix subscribers. The platform is adding a lot of content for this period, including the latest instalment of The Crown, and several of its Christmas titles ahead of the festive season. Focusing on this week, though, what movies and series are Netflix putting out to keep us busy?
Well, first up on November 2nd is the 2018 science fiction film Prospect, which sees Pedro Pascal and Sophie Thatcher as a father and daughter team who travel to a moon to mine for rare gems, but soon encounter bigger problems. Prospect was the feature-length directorial debut of Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell, and enjoyed a limited release and some decent critical responses.

Before Pedro Pascal suited up as a badass bounty hunter on The Mandalorian, he starred in an underrated sci-fi film called Prospect, which you may have overlooked when it released in theaters back in 2018. That’s okay, though, because if you’re a Netflix subscriber, you won’t have to wait too much longer to give it a watch, as it’s coming to the platform next month – November 2nd, to be exact.
Directed by Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell, Prospect tells the story of a father (Pascal) and his teenage daughter (Sophie Thatcher), who have journeyed to an alien moon in an attempt to mine gems in its very dangerous forest full of poison and rival prospectors. Gunpowder and Sky's new sci-fi label Dust is releasing their inaugural film, Prospect, into New York and Los Angeles theatres on Friday, November 2, and for Zeek Earl and Christopher Caldwell, this is huge deal. The two young directors have been working to get Prospect made for most of their adult lives, and the journey from debuting the short film version in 2012 to having their feature bowing in local theatres marks the end of a journey as treacherous and emotional as the one taken by the characters in their film. I've sung the praises of the film on these pages before, but I'll repeat myself here. Prospect wins top marks for juggling intricate world-building and character-focused storytelling on a tight budget. The production design...

While at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival, filmmakers Chris Caldwell and Zeek Earl celebrated the world premiere of their low-budget/high-ambition sci-fi western Prospect, which follows a father/daughter team of terrestrial miners who end up in a fight for their lives after a routine excavation goes awry. The family at the center of Prospect is portrayed by indie pioneer Jay Duplass and up-and-coming actress Sophie Thatcher, and Daily Dead spoke with the duo in Austin this week about their recent collaboration and more.
Congratulations on Prospect—it’s really an incredible film. Clearly, there was some really good stuff for you both to dig into with this film, but from your perspectives, what was it about these characters in this world that appealed to you?
Jay Duplass: I thought that the world was incredibly well-built. The guys had a short film that was beautiful, too, and there was this human...

The uncharted, lawless era of the 19th century Gold Rush, and the accompanying American dream notion that went with it—journeying thousands of miles for a better life with the hopes of striking it rich— are transposed to the world of sci-fi in Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell‘s “Prospect,” a sci-fi/Western hybrid that debuted this week at SXSW.
A well-natured amalgam of both, say, “Star Wars,” and Duncan Jones‘ “Moon,” especially in its impactful first half, “Prospect” tells the story of a teenager (Sophie Thatcher) and her father (Jay Duplass) who travel to a remote alien moon’s toxic forest on the hunt for a rare substance, aiming to make a mint.

Juried prizes were presented tonight at the 25th annual Swsw Film Festival. Jim Gaffigan, in Austin to represent the Miranda Bailey-directed ensemble comedy “You Can Choose Your Family,” presided as host. The venue was the Paramount Theatre, a 103-year-old landmark just blocks from the Texas Capitol.
SXSW will continue screening films through Saturday, when most of the festival’s audience awards recipients will be announced. The exception is for the headlining films, such as “A Quiet Place,” “Blockers,” and “Ready Player One” — those verdicts follows on March 19.
This year’s line-up comprised 256 total features and shorts, culled from 8,183 submissions. Best narrative feature “Thunder Road” was adapted from the namesake, one-take short that won a Grand Jury award at Sundance in 2016.
Lena Dunham’s “Tiny Furniture” (2010) and Destin Daniel Cretton’s “Short Term 12” (2013) are among the best-known past jury victors at SXSW. IndieWire’s Dana Harris helped choose the Louis Black “Lone Star” honoree,...

Prospect begins with an alien moon rotating through the grungy windshield of a massive orbiting space station. But instead of the sweeping orchestral score you might expect -- one to signify the epicness of the moment -- an equally grungy garage rock song clatters over the soundtrack. It's jarring, but there's a point. Cut to our lead, Cee (played by Sophie Thatcher), focused on a notebook she's writing in, listening to the track on a pair of retro-chic headphones; she's a recognizable teenager if there ever was one. The point of this anachronism is immediately clear. Co-writer/directors Zeek Earl and Christopher Caldwell are communicating something many science fiction films forget: that it doesn't matter the time one finds themselves in, human concerns remain the same...

As anyone who has seen the film will tell you, few directorial debuts match the level of ambition of Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell’s blockbuster indie, Prospect. Earlier this weekend, this writer had the opportunity to check out two wildly different films that enjoyed their world premieres as part of SXSW’s 2018 Visions slate: Fritz Böhm’s Wildling and Prospect from the directorial team of Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell. Even though both movies feature a coming-of-age tale that centers on the relationship between a father and daughter, they are vastly different from each other, with Wildling going for more of a modern fairy tale approach, and Prospect being something of a scrappy yet wonderfully ambitious sci-fi western.
Wildling: For his feature film debut, Fritz Böhm introduces us to the world of “wildlings,” dangerous forest-dwelling creatures who steal and feast upon small children. We’re told about the threat they pose via a bedtime story from Daddy (Brad Dourif) who reminds his young daughter Anna of the threats that exist all around her. Because of the wildlings,...

The first thing you notice are the smudges on the glass. We’re on a space freighter orbiting around some distant alien moon, and the thickly reinforced window is caked with grime and fingerprints. Sailing among the stars has all the charm of an endless car ride cross-country, and the negation of any hi-tech awe and astonishment is a perfect note on which to begin the impressively made, if too-eager-to-please Prospect, expanded by filmmakers Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell from their 2014 short of the same name.

It's a little hard to decipher just what the hell is going on in the recently released teaser for Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell's Prospect, but there's certainly plenty of of intrigue to be had. Prospect, the intriguing indie sci-fi thriller lead by Jay Duplass and Pedro Pascal is premiering at SXSW this week and to celebrate the production has premiered a first-look teaser. "Some of us have the proclivity for greatness, while others do not." Another new teaser trailer for a SXSW Film Festival premiere. The first teaser has landed for Prospect, a sci-fi feature that is based on the short film of the same name that we featured on this site back in 2014. From directors Chris Caldwell & Zeek Earl, the film is about a teenage girl and her father who travel to a remote moon on the hunt for elusive riches. They discover others hiding in the moon's toxic forest and their visit quickly devolves into a desperate fight to escape. Jay Duplass and Sophie Thatcher star, with a cast including Pedro Pascal, Andre Royo, Sheila Vand, and Anwan Glover. So, this honestly looks even way better than I expected, with some truly exciting footage. Another film that should definitely be on your SXSW line-up. Can't wait to see it myself. Here's...

Writer/directors Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell made a splash in 2014 when their short film Prospect wowed audiences at SXSW and later went on to great success when it was released online. In the years since the debut of the short, the pair have managed to release another short film but they've been focusing the majority of their efforts on their debut feature also called Prospect, which is also an expansion of their short film.
Prospect stars Jay Duplass and Sophie Thatcher as Ezra and Cee respectively, a father and daughter team who travel to a remote moon in search of riches but the job turns dangerous when they encounter other prospectors. Along with Duplass and Thatcher, the movie also stars Pedro Pascal, Andre Royo, Sheila Vand, and Anwan Glover.

Can’t wait for the curtain to be raised on upcoming SXSW world premieres and unsatisfied with reading synopses? Well, there are other ways of exploring what the Texas-based festival has in store for lucky badge-holders. Thunder Road and Prospect are two feature films that made the 2018 cut and previously built a name for themselves as high-caliber shorts. The former is a Sundance award winner in which writer-director Jim Cummings also stars as Jimmy Arnaud, an officer who performs a one-of-a kind eulogy for his late mother. The latter (pictured above) is an SXSW 2014 vet. Conceived by Christopher Caldwell and Zeek Earl, it transports a father-daughter relationship to a toxic alien planet. A get-rich-quick effort takes a turn for the worse and the hunt...
