Chef Dominique Ansel released the Cronut on May 10, 2013. The night before this article from Hugh Merwin appeared in Grub Street. It defined the newfound pastry - it's "part croissant and part doughnut," obv - and expounded upon the "sheer implausibility and engineering genius" that goes into such a creation. Ansel sold them for 5 a piece out of his eponymous bakery. Within 3 days there was a line of 100 people around the block. Within two months, enterprising individuals were re-selling cronuts for 40 a piece. Two years later, dozens of people were still queueing up hours before the bakery opened.
I'm unaware of the length of the line outside the Dominique Ansel Bakery at any point post 2015. But humanity-shifting global events aside, I doubt it's very long. That's not a knock against Ansel or his cronut. It's just that the world has moved on. Frenzies for viral edible ephemera sourced from appearances in...

The making of “Ottolenghi and the Cakes of Versailles” was as complex as the confections created by the renowned pastry chefs it focuses on — and the result is equal parts beauty for both food and film.
The IFC Films documentary (in select theaters and on demand Sept. 25) follows chef Yotam Ottolenghi as he assembles an Avengers-like team of pastry chefs to bring the splendor and beauty of Versailles, in dessert form, to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art for the opening of a special exhibit about the French palace.
Helmer Laura Gabbert had read Ottolenghi’s unique recipe books; when she heard that he was the subject of the film, she wanted to be a part of the project. “I just kind of knew that any documentary placing him at the center would be special,” she says.

If 2020 has taught us anything that we didn’t already know, it’s that everything is cake. This roll of toilet paper? Cake. This pit bull? Cake. This human butt? Definitely cake. The realization that all matter in our universe is actually cake raises a handful of questions, some practical (is this review a cake?), and some existential (am I a cake?), and some historical — if everything in the present is cake, does that mean we can eat history with a fork?
As is so often the case, however, Yotam Ottolenghi got there first. The revered Israeli-born chef, restaurateur, and food writer has become one of the most influential cookbook authors in the world not just on the strength of his recipes, but also because he thinks of them as a link to the past — as an experiential way to reanimate faded eras through taste, smell, and any other sensations that books,...

If you’re one of those people who’ve been using the pandemic to start working on your sourdough bread starter, “Ottolenghi and the Cakes of Versailles” might make you feel like something of a slacker. Or maybe it’ll send you to your local bakery for a to-go order. Or maybe you’ll just sit there watching it and drooling.
Whatever reaction it inspires, the IFC documentary from Laura Gabbert that opens in select theaters and on-demand on Sept. 25 will involve your taste buds more than a usual movie. Awash in impossibly elaborate desserts inspired by the French court of Versailles, it shows us a series of pastries or jellies that look too good to eat but too delicious not to. To watch it at home where you have to make do with whatever’s in the fridge, or in a theater where you have to wear a mask...

During quarantine, perhaps you’ve tried your hand at baking some bread or pastries. A new documentary is now arriving that will offer some major inspiration to strive towards for your next culinary confection. Renowned chef Yotam Ottolenghi was asked by Metropolitan Museum of Art to collaborate on an exhibition entitled Visitors to Versailles (1682-1789) in which he would represent the famous château in cake form. The process was captured in Ottolenghi and the Cakes of Versailles, a new documentary by City of Gold director Laura Gabbert. The Tribeca and Hot Docs selection will now arrive next month from IFC Films, and today brings the first trailer.
Jared Mobarak said in our review, “Laura Gabbert’s companion film Ottolenghi and the Cakes of Versailles arrives to document the event and its myriad moving pieces while also allowing the general public a look at the splendor of what those lucky few enjoyed that June.

The choice of “medium” was easy for renowned chef Yotam Ottolenghi when asked by the Metropolitan Museum of Art to collaborate on their upcoming 2018 exhibition entitled Visitors to Versailles (1682-1789). Whether or not Marie Antoinette actually said the infamous line with which she’ll forever be entangled, the excessive decadence and bloody decline of the Château de Versailles as royal court cannot escape its confectionary marriage with cake. So Ottolenghi set his sights on selecting five of the most innovative and unique pastry chefs from his Instagram follow list to take up the challenge of embodying the period in sugar on a grand artistic scale at one of the art world’s most revered establishments. Billed as performance art, their creations would provide a two-night sensory experience.

Initial thoughts are coming in, and things aren’t looking good for the new short form mobile-only streaming service, Quibi.
“In August of 2018, media mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg announced his newest business venture: Quibi. We Are Still Here is a haunted house thriller built on meticulous calculation. Writer/director Ted Geoghegan makes it obvious that unspeakable horrors are buried deep beneath this New England-set nightmare’s evil house, yet he doesn’t ruin any surprises early or often. Spirits linger, tension mounts, but nothing truly submerges into darkness until an explosive grand finale that sets a gruesome home restoration in motion with a brand new goretastic look. There are some pacing problems along the way, as we lust for a bloody taste of the action Geoghegan repeatedly teases, but those with more patient horror tenancies will be rewarded in the form of head-splitting insanity.
Geoghegan’s concept is a simple one, calling back to a sleepy town cultism that was more popular in horror films of yesteryear. A time when communities had dark secrets, and the preservation of such beliefs spelled trouble for any...

We're over the cronut, right? We've realized by now it's just half a croissant and half a donut and it will not fix the economy or bring about world peace. Especially since chef Dominique Ansel, the man behind the cronut, unveiled his new creation this morning. (For effect, open a new browser tab and turn on Jay Z and Swizz Beatz "On To The Next One.") Ansel made his announcement on Good Morning America, accompanied by much pomp and circumstance. Which is a little...calm down. We've been doing this hybrid food thing for a year now. We get it. Just tell us what it...

In terms of trendy hybrid food creations, Dominique Ansel's cronut has staying power. Unlike most of the monstrosities that popped up in its wake—the combo foods you'd eat once just to say you did—the cronut has the power of longevity. People will go back for more. Los Angeles-based Churro Borough may finally have found a worthy successor, another dessert that has the potential to be more than just a flash in the pan: The churro ice cream sandwich, a treat both crispy and sweet. It's the brainchild of chef Sylvia Yoo, who tells Chow she was "inspired by both Los Angeles street food and street art culture," combining two popular L.A. "street desserts" into one. Yoo...

Thursday was an exciting night for Popsugar at the Digital Newfronts in NYC, where we presented our returning video content as well as announced an exciting lineup of new, original programming. Community star Gillian Jacobs took the stage to talk about her new show, Fetch Fashion, which will feature her adorable pup, Mick. We're also thrilled to be partnering with Katherine Schwarzenegger for What Now?, which will help recent college grads navigate the exciting (and often confusing) 20-something years. Other new programming includes the relationship-focused #fulldisclosure and our first scripted comedy series, Seriously Distracted. As for returning programming, Charlotte Ronson joined the We Spy Style panel for a live version of the show, and Dominique Ansel (yes, the inventor of the Cronut!) shared his latest yummy creation with Brandi Milloy for Eat the Trend. As we watched Dominique debut his new waffle ice cream sandwich, we were able to sample...

Dominique Ansel, the inventor of the Cronut and the cookie and milk shot glass, has come up with yet another dessert mashup, and this one is also ridiculously named. It's called a Waffogato, and it's waffle made out of ice cream and topped with maple syrup espresso. An ice cream waffle. Is this what heaven is like or is this a sign of the end of days? Either way, we want it. Mashing up foods to make a cleverly-named new product is all the rage nowadays, and we want in. So chefs of the world, please accept our most humble suggestions for combination treats. All we ask is that you cook it to make it delicious and we get all the credit and money. Baconito: A burrito that is filled with bacon. The shell is also...

Celebrities are used to getting special treatment, but no one is getting special treatment when it comes to the elusive Cronut, as Emma Roberts learned.
On Thursday, the 22-year-old actress was turned away from the Dominique Ansel Bakery after she and her publicist tried to skip the legendary line that forms in the wee hours every morning. According to the Daily Mail, after Roberts and her rep were told there was absolutely no line cutting when it comes to scoring Cronuts -- the croissant/donut hybrid -- the actress went to the back of the line, but soon learned the bakery was out of the pastry for the day.
While most business owners would welcome celebrity promotion and let someone like Roberts cut the line, the Cronut is already so overhyped it needs no outside help. Tourists and New Yorkers alike line up as early as 6 a.m., as shown...

According to the UK's Daily Mail, "We're the Millers" star Emma Roberts learned an important life lesson recently: Being Hollywood royalty doesn't get you any closer to a cronut than the rest of us.
The 22-year-old actress/niece of Julia Roberts headed to Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York yesterday morning to score one of their famous croissant-donut hybrids, but instead of waiting patiently in line, the Daily Mail reports, she attempted to cut to the front via her publicist.
No dice, said the bakery bouncer/keepers of the Cronuts, and Roberts apparently ditched the pastry-hungry mob scene after only a few more minutes of waiting.
But that's not really how it went down: Later that day, during her appearance on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," Roberts explained that she didn't even realize there was a line, and once she discovered it, she was embarrassed about her mistake but gamely...
