Delays are bound to happen when making movies, but something was clearly wrong when Amusement was postponed not once but twice in 2008. It wasn’t long before John Simpson’s American directorial debut was removed from the theatrical schedule altogether and then later dropped on DVD that following year. Although going from the big-screen to direct-to-video is an undeserved fate in some cases, this movie’s new destination was understandable. The unfavorable feedback from an early test screening — the word “disastrous” was tossed around — forced Warner Bros to salvage the potential flop now on its hands. Nevertheless, the negative consensus hasn’t stopped Amusement from amassing a small fan base over the years; its followers focus on this panned movie’s few merits rather than its many shortcomings.
At first, Amusement looks to be an anthology; this horror movie’s first three acts are well defined and almost function as standalone short features.

Soon a number of other beautiful women turn up dead, their throats also cut open. Nurses, students, stewardesses… what’s the common thread? All were centerfold models for a popular men’s magazine, prey to a bloodthirsty psychotic with a straight razor!
Framed by an unusual three-story arc and jam-packed with delectable nudity and grim violence, The Centerfold Girls is an exploitation masterpiece, a depraved hell-ride through the skuzzy Seventies grindhouse circuit where sleaze and mean-spiritedness prevailed. San Diego police are investigating the death of 58-year-old Caligula actress Anneka Di Lorenzo (aka Anneka Vasta), whose body was found Jan. 4 by joggers on a military training beach in San Diego County. Di Lorenzo appeared in a handful of "exploitation" movies of the '70s, most notably as Roman Empress Messalina in both Tinto Brass' Caligula and Bruno Corbucci's Messalina, Empress of Rome. Investigators are trying to figure out how Di Lorenzo/Vasta, a resident of the Los Angeles suburb of Sherman Oaks, ended up in the water. Her car and belongings were found atop a bluff; had she jumped, investigators say that her body wouldn't have landed in the water because the tide doesn't come up that far. In Caligula, the beautiful, sculptural Di Lorenzo was featured in a memorable lesbian sex scene with Lori Wagner. Other credits, film and otherwise, include (with her last name...

Every guy likes to look at a centerfold, but Andrew Prine likes to look too. However, after ogling their pictures he comes after them with a straight razor and kills them. There may be a grand amount of female flesh but the acting is pretty atrocious (save Prine). Yeah . like you.ll be watching it for the acting. Clement Dunne (Andrew Prine) likes looking at centerfold. That might seem like somewhat normal behavior if he didn.t track down the models and kill them and take their shoes. Before killing them he likes to taunt them with phone calls. He.s uncertain in his sexuality and takes it out on the women that expose themselves in the cheap magazines. His...

I get lots of lovely lurid stuff in the mail that sometimes I just don’t have the time to write about and the stacks of sick flicks are starting to pile up. So just to ensure that these occasionally spectacular new release/ reissue titles don’t slip through the creepy cracks, allow me to insert this little dark entry in ye old Bloode Spattered Blogge and lay some love on a slew of pictures that recently rocked my world.
Ready? Here we go…
The Centerfold Girls
I first sort of picked up on the myth of Andrew Prine back in the late 80’s, when I caught a screening of Charles Band’s ho-hum sci-fi action cheapie Eliminators on late night TV. His presence failed to register, but the name for some reason seemed to stick in my skull. The deeper I sunk into my never ending obsession with grittier strains of horror cinema,...

Directed by John Peyser
Starring Jamie Lyn Bauer, Aldo Ray, Ray Danton, Francine York, Jennifer Ashley, Tiffany Bolling, and Andrew Prine
1974, Dark Sky Films
On DVD April 28th, Centerfold Girls is a gritty and grim movie not just about deranged killer stalking vapid, busty nude models, as the title first implies. It’s about all the horrible things that happen to perfectly nice girls whose only fault is talking their clothes off for a men’s magazine. The way people see them and the way they’re degraded by sex-crazed perverts is completely undeserved: most of them are actually pretty nice girls who just needed a few extra bucks. Centerfold Girls focuses on two models that are systematically stalked and killed by a very convincing Andrew Prine as 'Clement Dunne', a man who feels that posing nude is wrong and that these women need to suffer…...

• Dark Sky Films has announced a pair of vintage chillers debuting April 28. The company passed on cover art and details for 1966’s The She-beast and 1974’s The Centerfold Girls.
She-beast, the debut feature by writer/director Michael Reeves of The Conqueror Worm/Witchfinder General, stars genre veterans Barbara Steele and Ian Ogilvy as newlyweds who get into a car accident while driving through a town in Transylvania. Their vehicle winds up submerged in a lake, and while the husband emerges as himself, his wife comes out possessed by the vengeful spirit of an 18th-century witch. The movie will be presented in a new 16x9-enhanced widescreen transfer from original vault materials, with audio commentary by Steele, Ogilvy and producer Paul Maslansky. John Peyser’s Centerfold Girls, starring B-movie stalwart Andrew Prine as a madman “punishing” women who have posed for a men’s magazine, also gets a new uncut transfer from the original camera negative,...
