Zachary Quinto has played “a lot of dark characters” in his career.
So when he was offered the starring role in “Brilliant Minds” he jumped at it because the series “really comes from a place of light.”
In the NBC medical drama, he plays Dr. Oliver Wolf, an eccentric neurologist treating patients with rare mental health conditions at a Bronx hospital. It is inspired by the late Dr. Oliver Sacks, the neurologist and writer portrayed by Robin Williams in 1990’s “Awakenings.”
“I think it’s so important, now more than ever, for people to be looking toward and leaning into the light. Because I think we’re really seeing in ways that we haven’t yet even been able to completely comprehend that what we’re really in the middle of is this battle between light and dark, expanded consciousness and limited consciousness, seeing the idea of evolution and what...

Nearly 20 years after his breakout role in “Heroes,” Zachary Quinto returns to NBC as a world-class, eccentric doctor in “Brilliant Minds.” The “Star Trek” and “American Horror Story” star plays Dr. Oliver Wolf, a neurologist who lives with a brain disorder — prosopagnosia, colloquially known as “face blindness” — and believes “you can’t treat a patient without understanding who they really are and sometimes the only course of treatment is breaking the rules.”
But Dr. Oliver Wolf isn’t a figment of fiction and those philosophies weren’t invented for the screen — he’s got his roots in the incredible true story of a legendary physician. Here’s what you need to know what’s true in “Brilliant Minds.”
Is “Brilliant Minds” based on a true story?
Yes, but it’s not strictly following the details of the real-life Dr. Oliver.

Though inspired by famed neurologist Oliver Sacks (Awakenings), Brilliant Minds’ maverick doctor hero Oliver Wolf (the intense Zachary Quinto) also owes a debt to his TV predecessors. Like Hugh Laurie in House, he’s an abrasive rule-breaker, a genius who annoys those in authority while solving profound medical mysteries—think of him as a brain whisperer—with quirky interns eagerly following his every move. Like Freddie Highmore in The Good Doctor, he has a condition you wouldn’t expect in a healer: face blindness. “It makes you look so much deeper. You see the stuff the rest of us miss,” a colleague assures him, perhaps a bit too on the nose. Also rare in a lead character, Oliver is openly gay, although in the first episodes, his affections are focused solely on his noble profession and his considerable empathy reserved for his troubled patients. The cases of the week tend...

Jimmy Fallon gets a lot of flack for his interviewing skills. We've criticized him on this very sight when it comes to his penchant for cutting guests off, or stepping on a joke that took minutes to build up. He isn't the smoothest in this regard.
That said, Jimmy Fallon is human, and things can get awkward for him during interviews as well. The veteran Tonight Show host opened up about this exact topic during a 2019 interview on Watch What Happens with Andy Cohen.
Jimmy Fallon initially struggled with Robert De Niro
Fallon was asked to reflect on the most akward late night interview of his career, and he came up with a name right away: Robert De Niro. The host told Andy Cohen that he struggled mightily with De Niro, as the conversation seemingly went nowhere.

Robert Downey Jr. looks to have Best Supporting Actor locked up after he swept the precursors for his sterling turn in Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer.” But while Downey Jr. would be more than a deserving winner for his phenomenal performance, the Oscars always throws up a surprise or two on the actual night. Could we see an upset in Best Supporting Actor?
Downey Jr. is nominated alongside Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”), Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”), Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”), and Robert De Niro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Gosling has lots of support for his sublime “Barbie” performance while Ruffalo and Brown also have their backers, too. However, the legendary De Niro could prove to be the closest challenger to Downey Jr. thanks to his iconic career and status.

Amid tributes from Brad Pitt, Carey Mulligan, and the 2024 Santa Barbara International Film Festival itself, “Maestro” director, co-writer, and star Bradley Cooper fit in his own send-ups to a few famous names he’s gotten to work with.
On Thursday evening, the multi-hyphenate was on hand to accept the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award, and the current Oscar nominee reflected on his career in conversation with Deadline’s Pete Hammond, including the period in which he was a student asking questions at tapings of “Inside the Actors Studio,” hosted by James Lipton.
Recalling when he got to query his future “Silver Linings Playbook” co-star Robert De Niro about whether an acting choice he made in the 1990 film “Awakenings” was inspired by someone he knew, or was organic, Cooper said, “I thought maybe he would laugh. You think all these weird things, that he was going to laugh at you.

There is a video of a young Bradley Cooper asking a deeply thoughtful question to Robert De Niro about his process for the film “Awakenings.” He was among those studying at The Actors Studio Drama School who were the audience for “Inside The Actors Studio” hosted by the late James Lipton. Bradley would guest on the show in 2011.
Through the 2000s, Cooper had great stints in television with a lead role on the Fox sitcom “Kitchen Confidential” which was cancelled after one season and a regular role in J.J. Abram’s “Alias.” It wasn’t until 2009’s “The Hangover” that he got his big break. Todd Philip’s chaotic buddy comedy was a box office smash, making just shy of $500 million worldwide on a $35 million budget. It even won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy in 2011. This spawned two successful sequels that took the box office total for the trilogy to nearly 1.5 billion dollars.

Robert De Niro has been working in Hollywood for almost six decades now, with eight Oscar nominations to his name and two wins. His most noted collaboration has been with director Martin Scorsese, with whom he has done 10 films, including their latest partnership on “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which was released October 20 through Apple Original Films. In celebration of the western crime epic, let’s take a look back at De Niro’s eight Oscar nominations in 45 years; seven for acting and one for producing.
His first Oscar nomination and victory came on the heels of Francis Ford Coppola’s epic crime film “The Godfather” with the equally successful second installment “The Godfather Part II” (1974), in which De Niro plays a young Vito Corleone, played by Oscar winner Marlon Brando in the first movie. A long-gestating medical drama that’s inspired by the late neurologist Oliver Sacks has been handed a series order at NBC.
NBC has given a series order to Dr. Wolf, which follows revolutionary, larger-than-life neurologist Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) and his team of interns as they explore the last great frontier — the human mind — while also grappling with their own relationships and mental health.
The project from writer/EP Michael Grassi and director/EP Lee Toland Krieger was the last 2023 pilot awaiting word of its fate from NBC.
The drama is inspired by the books “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat” and “An Anthropologist on Mars,” by Sacks, who died in 2015 at 82. Dubbed by The New York Times a “poet laureate of contemporary medicine,” Sacks dove into dedicated his life to studying the strangest and most mind-boggling brain disorders in the world as a window into human consciousness,...

“Killers of the Flower Moon” was the big player at this weekend’s BFI London Film Festival this week, dragging us journalists out of bed at 8 Am on a Saturday morning to see the Martin Scorsese epic. But it’s okay because we were treated to one of Scorsese’s best films yet.
The Apple TV+ release, due out on Oct. 18, stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart, who fell in love with Lily Gladstone‘s Mollie, a member of the Osage tribe in the 1920s. Meanwhile, Ernest’s uncle, William King Hale (Robert De Niro), schemed to murder his way to owning the oil headrights owned by members of the Osage tribe. The film has earned rave reviews. Here are the Oscar nominations we are predicting for “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

Robert De Niro is a legendary actor, starring in a string of iconic movies and winning two Academy Awards along the way. He picked up his first Oscar way back in 1975 for Best Supporting Actor before adding a Best Actor trophy to his cabinet in 1981 for “Raging Bull.” Two Academy Awards is impressive, but it isn’t a record haul (Katherine Hepburn has four for acting).
However, De Niro does hold the record for most featured appearances in Best Picture nominees — with 11 to date. That stat places him ahead of the likes of Cate Blanchett, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jack Nicholson, who have all appeared in 10 Best Picture nominees. Here’s De Niro’s breakdown:

Robert De Niro has been a frequent presence at the Academy Awards, winning his first Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for playing young Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather, Part II” (1974). He hit the jackpot yet again for his role as boxer Jake Lamotta in Scorsese’s “Raging Bull” (1980), which brought him a victory in Best Actor. “Taxi Driver” (1976), “The Deer Hunter” (1978), “Awakenings” (1990) and “Cape Fear” (1991) earned him subsequent nominations in lead, and he reaped another bid in supporting for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012) and one in Best Picture for “The Irishman” (2019).
Though he’s worked with some of Hollywood’s top directors, De Niro is best known for his collaborations with Martin Scorsese, starting with “Mean Streets” (1973) and leading to “Taxi Driver,” “New York, New York” (1977), “The King of Comedy” (1983), “Goodfellas” (1990), “Cape Fear,” “Casino” (1995) and “The Irishman.” Never ones to rest on their laurels, the duo are...

Bad guys tend to have a good time at the Oscars. From Christoph Waltz‘s 2010 “Inglourious Basterds” win for Best Supporting Actor to Anthony Hopkins‘ iconic 1992 Best Actor win for “The Silence of the Lambs,” you can always count on Oscar voters to take notice of a villain.
While those two examples are fictional, some actors have also had Oscar luck by playing real-life killers. For example, Charlize Theron won for playing Aileen Wuornos. Wuornos murdered seven men between 1989 and 1990 while she was a prostitute in Florida. She shot and robbed the seven men, who Wuornos claimed were clients who had either raped or attempted to rape, claiming self-defense. However, she was sentenced to death and executed in 2002 for six of the murders. Theron took home the Best Actress Oscar in 2004 for her transformative performance as the killer in “Monster.”

Tollywood hitmaker S.S. Rajamouli has won the best director award from the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) for his epic adventure film ‘Rrr’, reports ‘Variety’. The awards are seen as the bellwether for the upcoming Hollywood awards season.
Although ‘Rrr’ wasn’t selected to represent India in the international feature category of the Academy Awards, Variance Films has mounted a substantial campaign to have the film recognised in the general categories, including best picture. And as ‘Variety’ puts it, it looks like it could be paying off. Rajamouli’s win has been described as ‘one of the jaw-droppers’ of the evening.
NYFCC’s winner for best film has typically had a strong correlation with the Academy Awards’ best picture category. Since the expansion to nominees in 2009, only ‘Carol’ (2015) and ‘First Cow’ (2020) have missed Oscar recognition. The latter was the first film that has won New York’s top prize...

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And with its list of new releases for December 2022, Hulu is planning accordingly.
Compared to its rival streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, and HBO Max, Hulu is a bit more holiday forward in the final month of 2022. Sure, all the streaming services are bringing some Christmas content to the table, but Hulu is the only one to plant its flag in a special called It’s a Wonderful Binge. This comedic take on a psychedelic Purge-like Christmas is set to premiere on Dec. 8.
Elsewhere on Hulu this month, subscribers can look forward to the release of FX’s Kindred (Dec. 13). Based on a thrilling novel of the same name, this series follows a woman being violently yanked back and forth in time. In what’s increasingly become a tradition, Canadian comedy Letterkenny will premiere a new season the day after Christmas.

The Yule log is likely roaring on the fireplace of your TV screen — the holidays are upon us. Hulu is going all-in on their Christmas content with a few holiday features, including the debut of their original movie “It’s a Wonderful Binge.” But if you’re looking for a new television series to keep you busy till Christmas it’s all about the adaptation of Octavia Butler’s “Kindred,” the first television translation of any of Butler’s acclaimed literary works, coming to FX on Hulu this month.
Based on Butler’s 1979 novel, “Kindred” focuses on Dana James, a young Black aspiring writer living in Los Angeles with her husband Kevin Franklin. While in the process of moving, Dana abruptly finds herself tossed between the modern day and 1815 Maryland during the Antebellum period of the South. During her journeys to the past, she struggles to survive while trapped at...

Stand-up comedians are some of the neediest people on the planet. Their livelihood hinges on their laugh-provoking expertise, and every single performance can feel like a make-or-break referendum on their funniness. Even the greats feel this pressure. In the 2002 documentary "Comedian," Jerry Seinfeld observes that an established, widely beloved comic only gets a slim grace period between taking the stage and delivering the goods. People are paying a two-drink minimum — they expect to laugh.
Every comedian has an off-night, but I have a hard time envisioning what that looked like for Robin Williams. Ditto, Eddie Murphy. With Williams, you knew he was going to remove the restraining bolt from his brain and access that deep reservoir of jokes and references and spot-on impersonations with dizzying speed. Murphy was different. He exuded confidence, deftly gliding from bit to bit, secure in the knowledge that he could only kill. Maybe that's why...

Heading into the mid-1990s, Robin Williams was one of the most bankable stars going, but he was far from infallible. "Awakenings," "The Fisher King," "Aladdin" and "Mrs. Doubtfire" were bona-fide hits, but they were interspersed with massive flops like "Toys" and "Being Human." So while people flocked to Williams when cast in a compelling role, they didn't turn up just because his name and face were on the poster.
So when Barry Levinson reached out to his "Good Morning, Vietnam" star to provide the filmmaker's critically acclaimed, yet low-rated NBC drama "Homicide: Life on the Streets" a bit of must-see sizzle, there was no guarantee that his guest appearance alone would bolster the series' Nielsen profile -- particularly since he was cast as a tourist/father coping with the murder of his wife. Nevertheless, the episode in question, titled "Bop Gun," was slated as the show's heavily promoted season premiere.

Thanks to the one-two punch of 1987's "Good Morning, Vietnam" and 1989's "Dead Poets Society," Robin Williams had proven he was not just a skilled character actor but could tackle roles far removed from the bouncing-off-the-walls persona he embodied in his stand-up comedy. Yet, each film came with an asterisk. After all, "Good Morning, Vietnam" was written specifically for Williams, while there were still glimpses of his zestful comedic mannerisms ill-suited to the rest of his performance in "Dead Poets Society."
Enter "Awakenings," the film that served as the next logical step in Williams' evolution as an actor. The movie was loosely based on the 1973 non-fiction book of the same name, in which renowned neurologist Oliver Sacks details how, in the late 1960s, he was able to treat patients who had survived an epidemic of encephalitis lethargica (aka "sleeping sickness") from 1917 to 1928. Williams stars in the film as Sacks' fictitious surrogate Malcolm Sayer,...

"Aladdin" rode the crest of a powerful creative wave for Walt Disney Animation Studios upon its release in 1992. The musical fantasy was the studio's 31st motion picture and emerged within a renaissance of highly acclaimed animated tales like "Beauty and the Beast," following a decade of poorly-performing animated features. Its story is ostensibly about a street kid who finds a magic lamp, but it's the wild magic-man in the lamp, voiced by the late comedian Robin Williams, who remains the most recognizable character of the whole thing, serving up quick-fire zingers and impersonations of everyone from Peter Lorre to Jack Nicholson.
Dave Itzkoff shares insights on the "Awakenings" star in his 2018 biography "Robin," detailing the creative process behind the role of the genie when Williams joined the "Aladdin" team. While Jeffrey Katzenberg envisioned a swashbuckling historical fantasy like "The Thief of Baghdad," co-directors Ron Clements and John Musker (with encouragement...

Director Penny Marshall, coming off of Big (1988) and the Oscar-nominated Awakenings (1990), had watched a PBS documentary about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which launched in the 1940s, and sent the doc to Lowell Ganz, co-creator of her sitcom Laverne & Shirley and a baseball fanatic. With a deal at Fox expired, Marshall, who died in 2018 at age 75, made it clear to interested studios that League, focusing on fictionalized Aagpbl players, would be her next picture.
“I don’t know how enthusiastic all the studios were about doing a movie about women’s baseball, but they were very enthusiastic about Penny,” Ganz, who co-wrote the film with Babaloo Mandel, not to mention Splash and Parenthood, tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Welcome back to Oscars Playback, in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng revisit Oscar ceremonies and winners of yesteryear. This week, we break down the 63rd Academy Awards in 1991, honoring the films of 1990.
As far back as we can remember, Best Picture was “Dances with Wolves'” to lose. Even though many people then and now prefer Martin Scorsese‘s “Goodfellas” to have won, the Western — the fourth highest-grossing film of 1990 — pretty much had the award on lock. It led the way with 12 nominations and won seven, including Best Director for Kevin Costner, the first of three actor-turned-director winners of the ’90s. Besides “Goodfellas,” “Dances with Wolves” beat “Awakenings,” “The Godfather Part III” and “Ghost,” the highest-grossing film of the year, for the top prize. Seven-time nominee “Goodfellas,” on the other hand, just won one award, Best Supporting Actor for Joe Pesci, who had a banner 1990 between that and “Home Alone,...

We've seen Robert De Niro mix it up quite a bit when it comes to physicality on screen. We've seen the decorated actor involved in fights, stabbings, and shootouts in movies such as "Midnight Run," "The Godfather Part II," and "Heat." De Niro managed to walk off those film sets unscathed, but it was an emotional drama with no intense action scenes that led to him suffering a broken nose on set. And the blow that broke his nose came from none other than the late, great Robin Williams.
Williams and De Niro paired up for 1990's "Awakenings," a film inspired by a...

Altitude Films has debuted a new trailer for Ric Burns’ documentary ‘Oliver Sacks: His Own Life.’
Oliver Sacks was a man of extremes. In his youth, he was a self-destructive rebel who fled London for San Francisco to reinvent himself as a bodybuilding biker, struggling with drug addiction and his own sexuality. In his maturity, he became a pioneering neurologist and the author of best-sellers such as Awakenings and The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat. Filmed just weeks after receiving a terminal diagnosis with full access to the man himself and those closest to him.
The doc celebrates Sacks’ incredible life and reminds us of his most important teaching: that our ability to connect with others is what truly makes us human.
Directed by documentary filmmaker Ric Burns, the film features exclusive interviews with Jonathan Miller, Robert Silvers, Temple Grandin, Christof Koch, Robert Krulwich, Lawrence Weschler, Roberto Calasso,...

It’s blockbuster season and Amazon Prime is celebrating by bringing a major action film to its stream.
That’s right, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by none other than The Tomorrow War on July 2. The year is 2051 and mankind is locked in a vicious war against an alien species. Our only hope is to go back in time and find…Chris Pratt. Ok, perhaps that’s a little reductive of the film’s plot. Future humanity also comes back to bring Sam Richardson to the future.
In terms of originals, there isn’t much else to speak of on Amazon Prime this month. The only other major release is The Pursuit of Love on July 30. This BBC series is directed by Emily Mortimer and takes place during the WWII era and follows two cousins as they navigate their lives. Lily James and Andrew Scott star.
