Argentine film-maker Lucrecia Martel and veteran producer Paulo Branco have been confirmed as the final two ‘masters’ at the Doha Film Institute’s talent development event Qumra.
They will join previously announced mentor-speakers Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, French auteur Bruno Dumont and creative documentarian Rithy Panh at the third edition of the bespoke event, running March 3 to 8, 2017.

Hollywood loves the spin-off. Ideally, it’s a way of turning one success into two or three (or four or more) successes. Happy Days alone begat Laverne & Shirley, Mork & Mindy, and, Joanie Loves Chachi. But not every great spin-off idea becomes a reality, as Mental Floss’ Mike Rugnetta explains in an episode of The List Show called “29 Spin-Offs That Almost Happened.” Cynics might think of this as “29 Times The American Viewing Public Dodged A Bullet,” but there are some intriguing could-have-been shows in here, too. Friends fanatics, for instance, might have genuinely enjoyed Girlfriends, a proposed series built around Lisa Kudrow’s Phoebe Buffay character. Archer star Aisha Tyler would have co-starred in that circa-2003 project. The Simpsons, meanwhile, could have spawned at least two adjunct shows: a live action series devoted to Krusty The Clown and an animated one about what the other residents of ...

Over the past few years, Disney has made some hefty profits off of adapting their animated films for live-action. It worked with Cinderella, it worked with The Jungle Book, and the stars certainly seem to be aligning for the upcoming Beauty and the Beast. One film that seems perfectly suited for a live-action adaptation is Mulan, and it was no surprise when Disney officially announced recently that they’d, in fact, be doing exactly that. But who would’ve thought this would be the film mired in such interesting controversy, discussion, and dare I say…imitation…?
Recently, we reported on the controversy surrounding an early script that had a white male at the center of the Chinese conflict. It was later reported that this version of the script had already been reworked, and that the entire cast of the film would be Asian. Bullet dodged, Disney. Bullet dodged.

Remember when Grange Hill went to the Isle Of Wight? Or the escaped puma? Here are 12 memorable school trip episodes from the early years...
With just over thirty years worth of screen time, there are plenty of memorable moments in Grange Hill. From its inception in February 1978 the programme proved both entertaining and controversial. It tackled many difficult subjects head-on: bullying, vandalism, racism, censorship, shop-lifting, school uniform protest, teenage pregnancy and - most famously of all - drugs. However, every now and again it would attempt to give viewers a break from the everyday and head off on a day trip or weekend excursion.

From his Hyperion Cantos novels to his seminal Summer of Night and beyond, author Dan Simmons has provided readers with thought-provoking horror, science-fiction, and fantasy for decades. Being a fan of professional wrestling is often very similar to being a sports fan.
With both, you get shocking results, glorious highs, depressing falls from grace, and a fair share of scandals to boot. Although it may not seem the most immediate similarity, pro wrestling can also has its own version of the drama that comes with athletes switching teams, through the medium of the talent raid.
If executed at the right moment, talent raids can often change the entire landscape of the business. Nick is on a slab, and now the fun part begins … the investigation! No really, it’ll be fun.
We start with Alli screaming again and Julie screeching again. Julie says ‘Who did this to you?” but Nick passes out. Sami rushes over to Alli, and tells her not to look at the dead man, while Rafe walks up to see if he can help Julie with Nick. Julie screams “Get Back! You Hate Him. You All Hate Him!” You know, that hitman is still around, Julie. All it would take is one call.
The others try to approach, but Julie screams at all of them not to come any closer. Hope arrives, and the paramedics are not far behind. Julie Hisses at the paramedics “Get Away! I Don’T Know You, But You Probably Hate Nick, Too!”
The paramedics cart Nick away, with most of the Town Square Gang Of Suspects not far behind.

2013 has had some fantastic films from the passionate Ram-Leela to the dramatic Kai Po Che. There have of course been some majorly disappointing films. These either had fantastic trailers which showed promised of exciting cinema, or boasted star casts that would surely choose only the best of scripts. Take a look at the over-hyped films that brought nothing but heart-breaking sadness to the filmi buffs globally.
10. Bullet Raja
We were expecting a little bit of action, a little bit of comedy and little bit of romance. Tigmanshu Dhulia, director of the fantastic Paan Singh Tomar, sadly lets us down with this directorial venture. The dialogues are disappointing, the music is forgettable and draws the film out unnecessarily and the story is quite unbelievable. Sorry Saif, better luck next time.
9. Race 2

Fox Star Studio India’s latest hi-octane action-entertainer, Bullett Raja has already gained momentum amongst leading film critics of the country who have acclaimed the film to be innovative with ground-breaking concepts!
The promos of the film had already stirred a buzz with power-packed dialogues and bold performance snap shots that had the viewers anticipating for more until its release date tomorrow, 29th November. The film has been described to magnetise the Indian audiences with spanking new combinations of unexplored trails which have been successfully experimented and implemented by the makers of the film.
Bullett Raja claims to be pragmatic just like Tigmanshu Dhulia’s previous endeavors, designed with a rustic connotation showcasing the portrayal of a raw, unrefined and harsh template yet keeping it legitimate and totally justifiable. The dialogues and screenplay keep the viewers enveloped into the proceedings of the film with some very unexpected twists and turns towards the penultimate moments.

Saif Ali Khan returns to the big screen this Thanksgiving Thursday, November 28, in the Us and then the 29th the world over, in the much-talked-about new film Bullett Raja. Directed by last year’s National Award winner Tigmanshu Dhulia (Paan Singh Tomar), the film co-stars Sonakshi Sinha, Jimmy Shergill, Gulshan Grover, Chunky Pandey and mixes action, comedy, and romance into a full-on entertainer with some of the hottest music of the year.
Talkind about the film and especially his character, Saif said, “It’s a thriller about somebody who is quite an intelligent guy. He’s from a well-to-do Brahmin family so it’s very surprising that he ends up in this line of mafia work. But there is no other option for him.”
Adding, “It’s the rise of a gangster but his personality is larger than life and Tigmanshu has made it a point to make it lovable and entertaining.

True to its title, the film Commando not only did command decent collections at the Bo, but also gave Bollywood its very own desi action hero in the form of Vidyut Jamwal. Besides the upcoming film Bullet Raja (directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia), Vidyut is also doing a film with Ram Madhavani that's penciled on the lines of 300. Talking about the film, he clarified that it's not a remake of 300. The film will see him with other men looking masculine and strong as the Spartans of 300. Besides this, he didn't give any other details by saying that only an announcement has been made and the rest of the details of the film are yet to be finalized. Besides these, buzz is also strife that, Vidyut has also signed a film with Rajkumar Santoshi, although there is no official confirmation about the same. Watch this space for more developments.

The femmes are fierce in Arrow Season 2 (premiering Wednesday at 8/7c) — and we’ve got photographic evidence.
As previously reported, Oliver’s ex Laurel Lance (played by Katie Cassidy) — blaming the metaphorical “crossfire between two archers” for Tommy’s tragic death — has made it her mission “to bring down the Arrow” aka the last archer standing, says showrunner Andrew Kreisberg. And from the look of one sequence below, she has her prey in sight when she summons a cavalry.

To continue this morning's theme of fizz-bang, turbo-intriguing Kickstarter games, I present, without further ado, Zak Ayle's "Lioness," a point-and-click adventure about a freelance journalist, the yakuza, time travel, a cigarette-smoking cat, and interdimensional coffee, all rendered in colorful, rotoscoped pixel art.
"Lioness" -- also known as "Lionheart Drive" for some reason -- promises a non-linear story based on solving puzzles, talking to people, and exploring the game's brightly-neoned environments. "We are experimenting with unique new ways to approach games as a storytelling medium which haven't been explored in past adventure games," reads the game's Kickstarter page, but there's not much more specific than that.
We do know, however, that players will control journalist Eggert Kirby during his mission to track down seven mysteriously missing people. The game will also come in seven different "sessions" or episodes that will advance the plot and reveal more about Kirby's not-quite-normal environment.

This weekend, Star Trek Into Darkness hits theaters and the common consensus among reviewers seems to be that Jj Abrams' adaptation of the beloved series is even better this time around. The thing we're most excited about, of course, is Zoe Saldana's return as a young Nyota Uhura. Apparently Saldana's role is much bigger this time around, which means the Star Trek sequel is a can't miss for us!
Of course, lesbian and bisexual women are not strangers to the world of science fiction. In fact, we often find better representation in the fantasy realm than in any other genre. And even when we don't find queer women to swoon over, we find powerful women to root for.

Robert G. Putka‘s Mouthful and Jared Varava‘s Tumbleweed! are two short films that have been selected to screen at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival, which will run in Austin, TX on March 9-17.
Mouthful is Putka’s second short film, a verbally raunchy comedy starring Eilis Cahill and Conor Casey as a young couple whose relationship becomes strained thanks to an overly frank discussion about their sexual histories. The film was recently reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film saying “one shouldn’t assume too much how the premise of a young man and woman discussing [male] anatomy will play out.”
Putka has also mounted an IndieGoGo campaign to help fund his filmmaking team’s trip to SXSW and for marketing material, such as posters, T-shirts, press kits and such. If you want to help out, please visit the Mouthful IndieGoGo page.

Ayesha, a trained Karate and Kungfu expert known as Karate Queen in the film industry, makes a comeback with 'Obavva' and shows her prowess in fight scenes. Ayesha plays Lady Amithabh with five rocking fights in the second half.
The story is nothing but a remix of Shankar Nag's 1980s Kannada films 'Seetha Ramu' and 'Chandi Chamundi'. Director Anand P. Raju has never been apologetic about the fact and acknowledged taking references from the two films.

He's been all but forgotten, but the Lff's restrospective should spur new interest in the singing cowboy and his palomino, Trigger
It's as if Roy Rogers never existed. The "singing cowboy" has almost entirely disappeared from our screens. The only time you're likely to catch a glimpse of him is when Bob Hope movie Son of Paleface turns up on television – it features Rogers gently sending himself up, as well as his beautiful palomino Trigger, surely the most good-looking horse in the history of westerns, performing a dance.
Rogers (whose real name was Leonard Slye) made more than 80 films. Early in his career, he was one of the original Sons of the Pioneers, the cowboy singing group whose songs included Tumbling Tumbleweeds (featured in The Big Lebowski) and Cool Water. He had his own radio show, his own TV show and there was even a restaurant chain bearing his name.

Spread out across both the United States and two continents, Narrows exists despite geographical inconveniences for the sole purpose of creating devastating noise.
Though outside obligations will most likely relegate the live Narrows experience to a truly rare event, the shared need to exorcise their collective demons fuels the trans-global project. Yesterday, in unveiling the 10 Bitchiest Commenters of 2010, I noted that we used to rank the most prolific commenters each year but that, with 430,000 comments in the system, it would no longer be feasible. I was wrong. Steven Lloyd Wilson showed me how to do it on the site's Mysql database (which I like to pronounce My Squall to annoy programmer types). Steven Lloyd Wilson is some kind of genius. Seriously, people -- most of you probably don't realize how incredibly brilliant Slw is: You know he's got a Master's in Engineering, a Master's in History, and he's currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program from political science? Dude's got both sides of the brain covered.
Anyway, once he showed me how, it took about 30 seconds to come up with the list of the Most Prolific Commenters of 2010, which thus allows me to name check everyone who commented more than 200 times this year (sorry,...

It's 80's week here on Pajiba, which means I need to try and find as many 80's themed links as I possibly can, despite never having been alive during the 80's (*Evil Laugh*). Anyway, in honour of the decade that fashion forgot, let's all check out the Ghostbusters quiz and remember what the 80's were actually good for: Movies. (Litely Salted)
And for added 80's nostalgia, check out this mash-up of great movie dancing with the obligatory Kenny Loggins Footloose playing throughout. One small gripe here: High School Musical? Really? (Film Drunk)
Awwwwwww shiiiiiiiit. It's a cover-off! Alright everyone, who had the best Rolling Stone Cover: Mad Men or True Blood? Remember to show all your work; you'll get partial credit for it. (Evil Beet)
Oh, wait, never mind; Jezebel found all the little things that got photoshopped out of the cover. Ummmmm ... yay you guys? Oh what the fuck ever,...

Film: ‘Sanchari’; Director: Kiran Goyi; Cast: Raj, Biyanka Desai, Dileep Raj, Rangayana Raghu, Subbaraju, Bullet Prakash; Rating: **
‘Sanchari’ had created a lot of interest among the Kannada film fans as its songs were a big success. The songs topped the charts in music programmes and television channels.
Director Kiran Goyi had made an honest effort in his previous attempt ‘Payana’ but ‘Sanchari’ does not stand up to the expectations it had created before its release because of a weak script.

The first thing that comes to mind after watching this satire is, can a National Award winning director like S.V. Rajendra Singh Babu make such a crap with such brazen indifference?
Babu.

I didn't see last night's "The Office" because I was too busy getting my drank on with some of the funnest bitches on the planet, (otherwise known as Julie, Boo and Tracer Bullet) however I'm led to believe Jim and Pam finally had that baby of theirs last night? (Hairballs)
Ben Storey, a.k.a. Kamakaze Feminist, put together this charming piece on what to have for dinner on Oscar night. (Famous Dead White Guys)
What do you guys think? Can there even be a Freddy Krueger without Robert Englund? Either way, that movie looks scary as shit and I hope my boyfriend doesn't drag me to go see it. (Agent Bedhead)
The infinitely entertaining Rich from FourFour started a fun new tumblr page with screenshots of where he pauses DVDs and DVR. (Where I Pause)
Stephen King's Pet Sematary is getting remade, presumably because Stephen King hasn't written...

The title says it all. The year's almost over and...well, why shouldn't I do this list?
Here's how I went about it. I looked through all of this year's Ee columns (including those that came before the hiatus) and well, just looked. And the ranking doesn't really matter, except for my number one. Oh, and the top five. Because I rule this joint. And that's all.
Happy New Year!
20. What frigging help is it to the narrative for me to find out that some dude is riding an Otis elevator? As opposed to ... well, whatever other company makes elevators? --eddie
Not sure if you get them in other countries, but I occasionally come across elevators made by a company called Schindler. Which, of course, leads to me giggling out loud every time I enter one, before pointing at the Schindler logo and saying "Schindler's Lift!" to anyone else who...

Universe, you've done it again!
Hello my fine friends. I'm covering for Figglesticks this week because she's busy trying not to kill everyone in sight while prepping for her wedding this weekend. Hopefully by the time this gets posted I'll have completed the four-hour drive from D.C. to my parents place in New York. I was previously planning on going to Atlanta to spend the holidays with family until I realized that all I wanted for Christmas was to be left the hell alone. 2009 was kind of a shitshow, so my plans for the rest of it are to basically, keep my head down and ride it out as smoothly as a one can while being alternately drunk off their ass and full of hot chocolate. But if there's one thing that has made this year easier to bear, it's you freaks (and many, many meths). It's a pretty...

Looks like we're in for a few packed weeks of DVD releases leading up to Christmas, so get your wallets out and prepare to start emptying them. The biggest release in stores today is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which is obviously an essential purchase if you are a fan. Outside of that, we've also got Michael Mann's Public Enemies, Julie & Julia and the Robin Williams dark comedy World's Greatest Dad, plus a few cool docs including the Oscar shortlisted The Cove, and Oscilloscope's Beautiful Losers. Also, you know you want these two beautiful box sets: Criterion's Ak 100: 25 Films by Akira Kurosawa and Lost: The Complete Fifth Season (Dharma Initiation Kit). Will you be picking up anything this week? Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) Public Enemies [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) Julie & Julia [5] (DVD, Blu-ray [6]) World's Greatest Dad [7] (DVD, Blu-ray [8]) Home Movie [9] Lion's Den [10] The Skeptic [11] Humble Pie [12] Hooking Up [13] Run!

Originally a singer with "Sons Of The Pioneers" before becoming a film actor, 'Leonard Franklin Slye' aka 'Roy Rogers', his wife Dale Evans, golden palomino 'Trigger' and the German Shepherd 'wonder dog' named 'Bullet' were featured in over one hundred movies and The Roy Rogers Show, airing on radio for nine years before moving to television, 1951-1957.
