The likeness of Beavis from Beavis and Butt-Head has been terrorizing the city of Detroit, but Motown residents can rest easy — it’s not Ryan Gosling.
Mike Judge’s mid-1990s cartoon about a couple of chucklefuck teenagers bumming around Texas has been enjoying an unexpected spike in popularity, thanks in part to its recent renewal for another season on Comedy Central, but mainly due to the super-viral Saturday Night Live sketch featuring Gosling and Mikey Day as the titular duo’s doppelgangers. However, residents of Detroit have been seeing a lot more of Beavis than Butt-Head on the sides of buildings and all over construction sites as a street artist donning the moniker Bvis has allegedly covered the Motor City with the spray-painted face of his namesake.
Earlier this week, Detroit police apprehended one Bryan Herrin whom they claim to be the artist behind the wave of Beavis tags covering the city.

Any alternative comedy fan knows that Adult Swim’s April Fool’s Day programming is must-see television. The unabashedly weird late night network has turned messing with viewers into an annual tradition, often dropping buzzy new premieres in unexpected ways (like airing the entire “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” movie in a deliberately unwatchable picture-in-picture format) or replacing its existing programming with nonsensical content (like a 2021 stunt in which it satirically rebranded itself as a pre-school channel known as Adult Swim Jr.). Fans have come to expect a lot of Adult Swim on the internet’s least favorite holiday, and 2024 saw the network deliver one of its most viral triumphs to date.
One of the most anticipated shows on Adult Swim’s upcoming slate is Season 2 of “Smiling Friends,” Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack’s animated series about two mid-level employees at a company that promises to cheer up any sad...

Nobody does April Fools’ Day better than Adult Swim. For the past 20 years, the network has made it an annual mission to keep the prankish spirit of the jester-based day alive by throwing its viewers a curveball. Be it absurd gags, silly gimmicks, and sometimes grade-a shocking game-changers, April Fools’ Day is a colossal event for Adult Swim that every adult animation fan can’t miss.
Here are a few of the channel’s best April Fools’ Day moments from the past two decades.
2004 – Mustaches
Let’s go back to the prank that started it all—mustaches! It was just a night of regular adult animated programming, but with mustaches drawn onto all the characters in every scene in every show. It is such a simplistic gag, yet it birthed the tradition.

Prior to the debut of "The Powerpuff Girls" in 1998, show creator Craig McCracken had directed a series of tasteless cartoon shorts starring a character named No-Neck Joe. No-Neck Joe appeared regularly at the celebrated annual Spike & Mike Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation, cementing McCracken's underground credentials. The Powerpuff Girls first came into McCracken's repertoire as early as 1992, back when they were called the Whoopass Girls. The juxtaposition between the characters' creepy, ultra-cute, Margaret Keane-like faces and their ultra-violent behavior was the stuff of comedy legend, and McCracken kept the Girls in his back pocket for years.
Throughout the 1990s, McCracken rose in the ranks of the animation world, landing gigs on shows like "2 Stupid Dogs," "Dumb and Dumber," and, most notably, Genndy Tartakovsky's seminal series 1996 "Dexter's Laboratory." McCracken directed many episodes of the show. "Dexter's Laboratory" was one of four new series launched by the Cartoon Network...

Those who weren't of drinking age in the early 2000s likely wouldn't understand the baffling, Dada animated series "Aqua Teen Hunger Force." It was ostensibly a sci-fi sitcom whose three main characters appeared to be the mascots of some long-forgotten fast food chain. There was Mater Shake (Dana Snyder), a bloviating anthropomorphic milkshake cup, Frylock (Carey Means), the level-headed carton of french fries, and Meatwad (show co-creator Dave Willis), a ball of uncooked ground beef and the innocent "child" of the group. Shake, Frylock, and Meatwad didn't really have adventures, so much as they did complain about the weird aliens and mutants that regularly visited their run-down suburban home. The Aqua Teens were rude, dumb, pushy, and only seemed to dimly perceive the world around them. They regularly swam in their neighbor's pool without asking.
"Aqua Teen Hunger Force" ran sporadically from 2000 to 2010, making 100 fifteen-minute episodes. From 2011 to 2015, they continued their shenanigans,...

At the start of Matt Groening's and David X. Cohen's 31st-century sci-fi sitcom "Futurama," the alcoholic robot Bender (John Dimaggio) sounded a little bit more like a drunken vagrant. He slurred his speech more and seemed less able to concentrate. As the show progressed, Bender became more self-assured, like the guy at the bar who — after his fourth shot of Jim Beam — is 100% confident he could thrash the bouncer. Bender became egotistical in addition to being a drunken criminal. On DVD commentary tracks, the makers of "Futurama" have said that Bender, in being a robot, allowed them more explicit depictions of violence and vice; a human character cannot drink a gallon of rotgut whiskey and smoke four cigars simultaneously, but a robot can. The Fox censors are weird.
Prior to "Futurama," Dimaggio only had a few credits to his name. His first gig was playing ancillary voices in...

Throughout the 90’s, the popularity of more adult-oriented animation on TV would continue rising until the traditional kid-friendly Cartoon Network began airing more adult-animated programs after 11 pm. They eventually launched their Adult Swim slate of programs that catered to an adult audience that would be watching TV at that late of an hour. We would see the rise of cult hits such as Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Space Ghost: Coast to Coast. But no show seemed to have true crossover success until December 2, 2013, when an animated show debuted that resembled a more adult version of Back to the Future. The show came from controversial figure Dan Harmon who had recently been fired from his network series Community, yet it would be the show’s other creator that ten years later would make headlines for his off-screen behavior. It’s time we delve into the controversy surrounding Rick and Morty,...

Exclusive: After months of upheaval following the close last April of WarnerMedia and Discovery’s $43 billion merger, Michael Ouweleen sees a much more settled operating environment taking shape in 2023.
“We’re all feeling more possibility this year,” the president of Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Boomerang and Discovery Kids told Deadline in an interview. “Last year was hard” for the entire media sector.
Ouweleen took on his current role in June 2022 after having previously overseen kids and family networks during a 27-year run at Warner Bros Discovery, WarnerMedia and Time Warner. He is now spearheading an expansion of Adult Swim programming by one hour a day, starting nightly at 7 p.m. as of May 1.
The step-up for the Cartoon Network block is headlined by Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, a new show from Genndy Tartakovsky, who directed the first three Hotel Transylvania films and created previous Cartoon/Adult Swim shows Primal, Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack.

Those who weren't present in 2000 during the debut of Dave Willis' and Matt Maiellaro's "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" may require lot of context here. Broadcasting in 15-minute episodes on Cartoon Network's then-nascent late-night Adult Swim brand, "Aqua Teen" featured a trio of anthropomorphic fast food items that engaged in crass, idiotic adventures. There was Master Shake (Dana Snyder) an idiotic blowhard and would-be leader of the group. There was Frylock (Carey Means), the group's intellectual, who was possessed of curious, crystal-based superpowers. And there was Meatwad (Willis), the "kid" of the group. They lived next door to the horny and cantankerous Carl (also Willis), who hated them with a passion. The Aqua Teens were slackers par excellence, spending their time and energy on trivial activities like swimming in Carl's above-ground pool. Sometimes there were mutants and Moon Men.

Todd Field's "Tár," easily one of the best films of 2022, was a long time in the making. It is the first feature film Field made since "Little Children," which came out in 2006. In the intervening 16 years, Field attempted to make multiple projects, most of them based on his favorite books, to no avail. Among the filmmaker's unmade projects were an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian," a political thriller he co-wrote with Joan Didion, an autobiographical film about his childhood experiences working for the defunct Portland baseball team called the Mavericks, and a biography of Bowe Bergdahl, an American prisoner of war. It wouldn't be until "Tár" that his filmmaking career would finally pick up again, his third feature as a director, having made his debut in 2001 with the Best Picture Oscar nominee "In the Bedroom."

It starts like any other yule log channel, with a warm fire filling the frame. A landlady interrupts the yuletide joy, her legs and vacuum shuffling past now and then. The doorbell rings; an elder woman with a Southern accent is there with her large adult son (dubbed "Pleatherface" at one point), claiming their car broke down, then forcing their way in. Later an unwitting couple returns to the home, unaware of the grisly death that went down moments before their arrival. All the good girls and boys watching become captive witness to hillbilly murder, haunted logs, a cult, aliens, and a night of laughs at a cozy cabin in the woods.
"Get in the holiday spirit with this cozy, crackling fire," reads the HBO Max page for Adult Swim's "Yule Log," the latest fever dream from Cheddar Goblin commercial creator Casper Kelly ("Too Many Cooks"). /Film's Matthew Bilodeau...

Voice actors are some of the most underappreciated performers in show business. They're all over our media and they have a very unique skill set, yet they rarely get the recognition or the compensation that they deserve. With a few exceptions, most voice actors never become household names, even if their work is extremely prolific. Justin Roiland, the voice behind both Rick and Morty on "Rick and Morty," is one of the most prominent voice actors around, even if he admits his actual range is somewhat limited.
Roiland, who also writes and executive produces "Rick and Morty," has been around the block a few times when it comes to voice-over acting. He's lent his talents from family-friendly shows like "Gravity Falls" to late-night adult animation like "Aqua Teen Hunger Force." One of his funniest roles, however, was as The Earl of Lemongrab on "Adventure Time."

You probably don’t realize it, but we are currently in an animated music video renaissance. From the beautiful nightmares served up by DyE’s “Fantasy” to The Strokes’ incredible Heavy Metal homage “At the Door,” contemporary animated clips have been pushing the limits of music video storytelling.
Then there’s the throwback majesty of Wooze’s “Huge Axeman.” The latest single from the British/Korean duo of Jamie She and Theo Spark, the funky new wave-flavored jam sounds like Devo overdosing on Adderall. Wooze formed in England in 2017, but with this tune — a highlight from their new EP The Magnificent Eleven — the group may be poised for global, make that intergalactic, success. A huge reason for this is the video for “Huge Axeman” which was hand-animated by She over a period of six months.

Adult Swim is an icon of animation. The programming block turned cable TV channel is responsible for introducing American adult animation as we know it today — from "Sealab 2021" and "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" to "Rick and Morty" — while helping introduce anime to American audiences in a bigger way than before, turning shows like "Dragon Ball Z," "Sailor Moon" and "Mobile Suit Gundam Wing" into cultural phenomena stateside.
In recent years, Adult Swim has taken things a step further by co-producing original anime shows with Japanese studios, co-producing shows like "Flcl Alternative" and the recent "Blade Runner: Black Lotus," the latter being a co-production between Adult Swim and Crunchyroll.
Except this was back when Crunchyroll was owned by WarnerMedia, which allowed for easy collaboration. Everything changed when Sony acquired Crunchyroll, which made any present or future collaboration a bit difficult. Add in Warner Bros. Back in the 1960s, if you wanted to watch a weekly sitcom about monsters living in suburbia, there were only two games in town: “The Addams Family,” about a group of kooks whose wealth and largely normal looks gave them the freedom to pursue their freaky interests, and “The Munsters,” about a working-class group of unmistakable monsters whose outward appearance provided a humorous contrast to their utter normalcy.
The Addams Family have gone on to great cinematic success in the decades following their sitcom (and the New Yorker cartoons on which it was based), with successful live-action and animated movies to their name. But Hollywood hasn’t been quite so kind to The Munsters. Their show was originally a bigger hit than “The Addams Family,” but they’ve never been cinematically rebooted for the big screen. (Not counting the series spinoff “Munster Go Home!” in 1966.)
