- The Cartwrights protect a deaf-mute boy and his mother from his outlaw stepfather.
- A small boy, Tommy, who is deaf and mute is sent to Ponderosa by his mother, Allie. The boys father, Jess, has escaped from prison and is bent on winning back his divorced wife and son at any cost. Allie had grown up on Ponderosa and hopes that the Cartwrights can protect Tommy from his dangerous father. Afraid that Jess will hurt Allie, Ben Cartwright rides out to the farm where Allie lives and brings her back to Ponderosa. Jess, however, figures out that Allie and Tommy are staying at Ponderosa. He decides to go to Ponderosa and get his wife back by force. He shoots Little Joe and wounds him seriously. He is then able to force Allie with him to Mexico. The boy is left behind. Jess and Allie ends up in a small Mexican town, where Allie meets a deaf and mute priest which she confides in. The priest brings a message from Allie to Ponderosa. Ben Cartwright decides to set things straight and goes to Mexico to find Allie and bring her back. Jess tries to shoot Ben and Allie, but they are saved by the local police chief who kills Jess. Allie, Ben and the priest return to Virginia city where the priest will set up a school to teach deaf children.
