J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves’ animated series “Batman: Caped Crusader” has been picked up at Amazon after being scrapped at HBO Max, Variety has confirmed.
The streamer has placed a two-season order for the cartoon, which is described as “a reimagining of the Batman mythology through the visionary lens” of executive producers Abrams, Reeves and Bruce Timm.
“Batman: Caped Crusader” was ordered to series at HBO Max in May 2021. In August 2022, the show was scrapped along with five other upcoming animated series set up at the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned streamer, including “Merry Little Batman,” “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie,” “Bye Bye Bunny: A Looney Tunes Musical,” “Did I Do That to the Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story” and “The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie.”
The animated series getting the ax came following HBO’s decision to let go of Abrams’ science fiction drama “Demimonde” last June.

Cartoon Network and Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen knows you have questions about the fate of the two networks in the new, belt-tightened Warner Bros. Discovery era. And it has changed. But “we’re not dead,” he insists.
“It was weird to wake up a couple of weeks ago and read our obituary as we were alive,” say Ouweleen, whose oversight also includes Boomerang and Discovery Family. “We’ve got more stuff coming next year than we had this year.”
That includes preschool series “Batwheels,” from Warner Bros. Animation, which Variety has exclusively learned has been renewed for a second season. “Batwheels” is the No. 1 original preschool series with boys 2-5 on Cartoon Network, and the most-watched original preschool series on HBO Max, according to the streamer.
Still, Ouweleen doesn’t downplay the tough changes going on at the animated network. “It’s definitely a pivot, through the merger and...

It seems like since the merger with Warner Bros, Discovery CEO David Zaslav is not just overseeing the productions of previously announced projects, but he also appears to be cleaning house on movies or TV shows that the company can stand to save some money on. There already have been over 30 titles removed from HBO Max as a result. Now, TV Line is reporting that the six more animated HBO Max/WB animated projects are getting the axe.
The shows are:
Batman: Caped Crusader

The changes at HBO Max keep on coming as the streamer has now shelved six animated projects, including the Batman: Caped Crusader series from J.J. Abrams, Bruce Timm, and Matt Reeves. These projects include Merry Little Batman, The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Toons Movie, Bye Bye Bunny: A Looney Toons Musical, Did I Do That to the Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story, and The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie. Batman: Caped Crusader, which was ordered straight-to-series in May 2021, was set to be an animated reimagining of the Batman mythology. HBO Max Cancels More Animation, Including ‘Batman: The Caped Crusader’ and 2 ‘Looney Tunes’ Projects
HBO Max continues its baffling decisions regarding its animated programming, with six animated projects no longer making their way to the direct-to-consumer streaming platform, TheWrap has confirmed.
Among the projects that will no longer stream on the platform: “Batman: The Caped Crusader,” from “The Batman” director Matt Reeves, J.J. Abrams and comic book luminary Ed Brubaker; “Did I Do That to the Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story,” an animated “Family Matters” spinoff; and two high-profile “Looney Tunes” features.
While those projects are still in development, some of which are pretty far along, TheWrap has confirmed that “Driftwood,” an original HBO Max animated feature from Victor Courtright, has been fully canceled.

HBO Max has canceled six upcoming animated series, including “Batman: Caped Crusader,” Variety has learned. The project was ordered to series in May 2021 with Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves attached to executive produce.
The other series on the chopping block are “Merry Little Batman,” “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie,” “Bye Bye Bunny: A Looney Tunes Musical,” “Did I Do That to The Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story” and “The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie.” Production on all six series continues, with plans to shop them to platforms besides HBO Max. Warner Bros. Animation is the studio for each, with the exception of “The Amazing Word of Gumball,” which is being produced by H-b Studios Europe.
“Batman: Caped Crusader” was meant to build on “Batman: The Animated Series,” which was co-created by Timm and aired on Fox Kids for 85 episodes from 1992-1995. This is the second project from J.
