Because memes never truly die, the disastrous Willy Wonka exhibit that spawned such viral images as the sad Oompa Loompa and ‘The Unknown’ now has a fully produced musical parody on the way titled Willy’s Candy Spectacular. Because that alone isn’t absurd enough, original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory actors Julie Dawn Cole and Paris Themmen have officially joined the cast.
Cole and Themmen, who respectively portrayed Veruca Salt and Mike Teavee in the 1971 classic, will serve as narrators in live stage readings of Willy’s Candy Spectacular, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The readings are set to go down at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with Cole leading the production from August 9th to August 18th and Themmen taking over from August 19th to August 26th.
Notably, Kirsty Paterson, the memed sad Oompa Loompa, is also set to appear. Other names involved include Shelly Regner (Pitch Perfect series), Eric Petersen,...

After more than 50 years, two actors are diving back into the world of Willy Wonka (sort of). Julie Dawn Cole and Paris Themmen, two of the child stars of 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, will participate in a live stage reading of Willy’s Candy Spectacular, an upcoming musical parody inspired by a disastrous Wonka event that made international headlines earlier this year.
Cole played the insatiable Veruca Salt in the classic movie starring Gene Wilder as chocolatier Willy Wonka, while Themmen played the cowboy hat wearing Mike Teavee. Both will participate in a live reading at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, serving as narrators. Cole will lead the cast from Aug. 9 to 18, with Themmen stepping in from Aug. 19-26.
Willy’s Candy Spectacular was inspired by a real-life Wonka event in Scotland, which organizers advertised as “immersive experience” that would transport Willy Wonka fans to a “magical realm.

Just before the credits roll on Edward Norton’s “Motherless Brooklyn,” a dame looks up to her unlikely protector and sighs, “It’s funny how things turn out.” She’s referring to the mystery that has preoccupied us for the previous two hours and change — a sprawling, ambitious tale of murder, blackmail and corruption in mid-century New York to rival “Chinatown” in its complexity, if not necessarily that brain-bender’s elegance or appeal — but she could just as easily be speaking of the journey Jonathan Lethem’s novel took en route to the screen.
“Brooklyn,” in this case, is the nickname for Lionel Essrog, aka “Freakshow,” a man with Tourette syndrome whose spontaneous tics and off-color verbal outbursts can prove embarrassing in public, but serve him well in the employ of a professional snoop named Frank Minna (Bruce Willis). Tonight’s episode of AMC’s Freakshow, “The Littlest Wedding” (9:30pm Et), features Amazing Ali (the littlest lady in L.A., standing at just 3’5″) and her upcoming nuptials to fellow little person Matt. Ali shares her wedding options with Venice Beach Freakshow owners and friends Todd and Danielle Ray, contemplating whether she should have a big wedding. Of course, Todd Ray — whose driving force of life is that feeling of pure amazement and astonishment — would never settle for something simple. Any wedding is a big deal for the participants, but preparing a wedding for two little people was no small order.
When Matt McCarthy, a Los Angeles-based entertainer, decided to propose to his girlfriend, 3-foot, 5-inch "Amazing Ali" Chapman, their friend, Todd Ray of the Venice Beach Freakshow, wanted them to do it up big.
"In this world, the sideshow circus world, this is a big deal," Ray told The Huffington Post. "It's a lot like the wedding of General Tom Thumb back in 1863, which was considered the wedding of the century."
General Tom Thumb, aka Charles Stratton, was a little person who worked for P.T. Barnum. His wedding to Lavinia Stratton was considered by many to be the wedding of the 19th century. The couple even honeymooned with Abraham Lincoln at the White House, according to Thumb's biographer, Melanie Benjamin.

Marcus Boykin doesn't look like anyone else on this planet.
That's by design: Boykin, who is known professionally as "The Creature," is a tattoo artist and body piercer who has turned his body into a canvas featuring his own unique designs and piercings.
Boykin, who performs at the Venice Beach Freakshow, adds a new mark each day and the 29-year-old does almost all of them himself.
When Boykin is pinned down on why he subjects himself to this, he explains it's a calling of sorts.
"Without feeling the needle feels like I'm losing my purpose in life," he said in the promo video for the the AMC reality series "Freakshow."
Boykin said that his outer body is like a serial novel of sorts.
"My body will never be done," he said on an episode airing Thursday night. "This is my story. I'm still living so my story cannot be done.

Secretaries get honored once a year, as do mothers, fathers and even people who talk like pirates, so why shouldn't sword swallowers?
That's what sword swallower Dan Meyer thinks.
For the last seven years, Meyer, president of the Sword Swallowers Association International has declared the last Saturday of February to be "World Sword Swallowers Day," a 24-hour period when the world's 200 or so sword swallowers sharpen their skills collectively.
This year, World Sword Swallowers Day is on Feb. 23, and blade gobblers will gather at various places around the world, including 18 of the 32 Ripley's Odditoriums, to perform solo swallowing and a simultaneous swallow at 2:23 p.m. local time.
World Sword Swallowers Day (Story continues below)
Sword swallowing dates back to around 4,000 B.C. Practitioners of this ancient sideshow art face death each time they attempt the feat -- and not just because the blade usually comes within one-eighth of an inch of the heart.

Asia Ray isn't old enough to drink legally, but she can already swallow something more lethal: swords.
Just 20 years old, Ray is not only an accomplished fire eater, she's also the youngest professional female sword swallower in the world -- an amazing feat, considering there are only 200 sword swallowers in the world, according to the Sword Swallowers Association International (Ssai).
Some parents might gulp if their kids wanted to swallow swords for a living, but Ray has had nothing but support from her parents, Todd and Danielle Ray. With good reason: They run the Venice Beach Freakshow in Los Angeles, which regularly features swords swallowers, fire eaters and the world's largest collection of two-headed animals.
The family business is now the subject of Freakshow, a reality show airing Thursdays on AMC, and Asia's attempts to sharpen her sword swallowing skills are an important subplot.

AMC's latest foray into reality is "Freakshow," which sums up what it is pretty well. There was a time when freak shows were as common as the traveling circuses -- and often part of it. But those times are long past. Todd Ray, a former music executive, would like to see those times return. He sees it as a celebration of diversity and being proud of who you are, while others might simply see it as exploitation.
Nevertheless, his Venice Beach Freakshow manages to lure not only paying customers, but people willing to be a part of his assembled oddities as well. And while some of them are bearded ladies or overly-tattooed and pierced men, there are also those who look normal but have a shocking act. An example of the latter is Morgue, who likes to drill into his face.

About seven years ago, Grammy-winning producer Todd Ray walked away from a successful music career to satisfy his sense of wonder by opening the Venice Beach Freakshow, a Los Angeles-area museum and stage show featuring some of the world's most amazing and unusual animals and people on the infamous Venice Beach Boardwalk. Ray; his wife, Danielle; and their two children, Asia and Phoenix, own and operate the show, and their passion for all things unusual is the subject of the eight-part series "Freakshow," premiering Thursday, Feb. 14, on AMC.

AMC is looking to add to its slate of reality series with two new half hour shows that sound like fun, but aren't. The first, Freakshow, is another incarnation of the "wacky family" series that chronicles the exploits of former music producer Todd Ray and his brood as they operate the Venice Beach Freakshow. If you're naturally drawn to the strange, and enjoy the oddities of a Victorian sideshow, and have already watched everything that TLC airs, Freakshow might hold some interest. But for the amazing tricks performed, there is an incredible lack of fanfare. In the episode I

Todd Ray is a collector of both unusual animals and unusual friends -- and he's turned that into an even more unusual career.
Ray owns the Venice Beach Freakshow, and it's not just one of America's most celebrated, never-end sideshows. It's a family business. His daughter, Asia, is the youngest female sword swallower in America.
Some of those people include 7-foot-8 George Bell, the second tallest man in America; Amazing Ali, a 3-feet, 5-inch woman; and Larry "Wolf Boy" Gomez, an entertainer who's face is carpeted with bushy hair, much like a mythical werewolf.
Now, Ray and his band of self-proclaimed freaks are hoping to be invited into other homes in America via "Freakshow," a reality show debuting Feb. 14 on AMC that focuses on the day-to-day life of him, his family, his friends and pets like Pinky, a two-legged chihuahua he rescued before she was euthanized.
