There was not really much explanation for the odd things going on, of course people are going to be left with questions...
I researched & found that the director got his inspiration from Stephen King's son, Joe Hill's "The Black Phone" but added elements of his own twist & childhood to it.
There was no explanation to how the boy's sister had the ability to see the kidnapped kids in her dreams, see the home of the kidnapper in her dream...
No explanation to how the broken wired phone was able to make calls from the dead...
Did the phone worked for the previous kidnapped children?? I don't think so, why does it work for this kid???
I have not read Joe Hill's short story either but what logic is it to have a broken phone as decor in the prison anyway??
I feel the director is a terrible story teller who doesn't like to go in depth into details. That's just not my style.
