Ryan Lattanzio

Ryan Lattanzio is the Deputy Editor, Film, for IndieWire, where he’s covered movies and television since July 2019. He oversees all of IndieWire’s film coverage, including festivals and features, while contributing reviews and stories of his own. Ryan is also co-host, with Editor-at-Large Anne Thompson, of IndieWire’s weekly “Screen Talk” podcast. At IndieWire, he has previously served as Deputy Managing Editor, News Editor, and Weekend Editor.
Way before IndieWire was acquired by Penske Media Corporation, Ryan worked closely with Anne Thompson as a staffer for her blog Thompson on Hollywood at IndieWire.
Some of Ryan’s favorite experiences at IndieWire have included interviewing Isabelle Huppert about one of his favorite films, “The Piano Teacher,” speaking to Elisabeth Moss at least three times about her taste for debasing herself onscreen, getting a bespoke “Psychomagic” reading from Alejandro Jodorowsky during the COVID lockdown, and being dryly told by Kirsten Dunst, “I text him on his birthday because it’s also my birthday,” after asking her if she’s still in touch with Lars von Trier despite him blowing her Oscar chances for “Melancholia” during his infamous Cannes 2011 “I’m a Nazi” gaffe.
A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature, Ryan prior to IndieWire served as the editor of communications at the American Film Institute for four years in Los Angeles, where he authored career-spanning AFI Life Achievement Award tribute books on John Williams, Diane Keaton, and George Clooney.
Throughout his journalism career beginning at The Daily Californian in college, Ryan has also written for the since-folded Bay Area alt-weekly SF Bay Guardian, covering San Francisco’s independent music scene as well as reviewing films. He also spent a year at the San Francisco Chronicle, first heading up social media for its Photo department before becoming a Features writer. Other experiences include a stint as a “Web Producer” (i.e., content migrator) at the also-since-folded Disney Interactive, and working as a researcher on Weather and History channel documentaries for a brief time, in which he also served occasionally as an extra.
He lives in New York City.
