🌱 The #DroughtResilience+10 Conference is closing up with the High-Level session 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 #𝗗𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗮 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗱𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱   GWP Executive Secretary & CEO Alan AtKisson co-chairs the session together with Prof. Celeste Saulo, Secretary General of World Meteorological Organization.   Ms Andrea Meza, Deputy Executive Secretary of UN Convention to Combat Desertification, provided opening remarks highlighting the great success of the conference.   AtKisson stressed how important this conference is to coordinate a joint way forward given accelerating drought risks. 🌱 Yesterday’s #DroughtResilience+10 session on collaborative approaches to #DroughtManagement and Resilience was a true example of community-driven learning in action!   Here’s what some of the participants said about the session convened by World Meteorological Organization, GWP & UN Convention to Combat Desertification:   GWP’s Valentin Aich 🗨️ "The Communities of Practice Platform of IDMP enables our partners to communicate directly to each other without going through us as the Secretariat. This is a huge win for all sides."   UNCCD’s Daniel Tsegai 🗨️ "The session today featured the role of various actors to address #drought proactively, across sectors and scales, putting a spotlight on the communities of learning and practice for drought. It was inspiring to see concrete learning among peers and practitioners on practical problems. It was a great exchange of experiences, lessons learnt, aspirations, challenges and opportunities."

🌱 As we discuss drought this week at the #DroughtResilience+10 Conference, together with FAO, World Meteorological Organization and Flood and Drought Management Programmes WMO - GWP, we present: 📃 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 #𝗗𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 #Droughts affect more people and are responsible for more deaths and damages than any other natural hazard. According to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, 1.84 billion people were drought-stricken in 2023, out of which 4.7 percent were exposed to severe or extreme #drought. Coordinated efforts facilitate the sharing of information, expertise and resources, leading to more robust risk assessments and drought management plans, improved community engagement, more timely response, and better preparedness for drought events. Now we need to change the mindset.” 11 years ago, the Integrated #Drought Management Programme (IDMP) was established in a joint initiative between GWP and World Meteorological Organization. From the get-go, UN Convention to Combat Desertification to Combat Drought and FAO have been vital partners.
