- He was brought into the Indian side midway between the inaugural season of the World T20 championship in 2007. Sharma played some impressive knocks and the Indian side, led by MS Dhoni, lifted the title that year
- In 2008, he was picked by the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Deccan Chargers
- Sharma took a hat-trick in a crucial match against Mumbai Indians in the second season of the IPL in 2009. His performance was impressive throughout the tournament and Deccan Chargers went on to win the IPL that year
- Sharma got his first ODI century in a match against Zimbabwe on May 28, 2010
- Though he was getting runs, albeit sporadically, he failed to gain the trust of the selectors due to his inconsistency and was eventually dropped from the 2011 World Cup squad
