Women leaders

Women are an integral part of every thriving community. Whether you’re running for office, a celebrity or in a prominent leadership position, we are committed to helping women safely grow their online presence.

How Facebook and Instagram address bullying and harassment.

Helping women feel safe to connect and engage with others is central to what we do. But a form of abuse that continues to exist when people interact with each other is bullying and harassment. At Meta, we use new technologies to reduce it on our apps, give people tools to protect themselves and also measure how we are doing.

We invest in proactive detection technology so we can quickly tackle problems on our apps. On Facebook and Instagram, we've added warning screens to discourage people from using harassing language. We’ve recently updated our AI technology to train across three different but related violations: bullying and harassment, hate speech and violence and incitement.

We use several approaches to reduce the prevalence of violating content, such as: removing accounts, Pages, Groups and events for violating the Facebook Community Standards; filtering problematic Groups, Pages and content from recommendations across our services; or reducing the distribution of likely violating content.

We also updated our policies to increase enforcement against harmful content and behavior for public figures. These updates came after consultation with free speech advocates, human rights experts, women’s safety groups, cartoonists and satirists, female politicians and journalists, representatives of the LGBTQ+ community, content creators and other types of public figures.

Be proactive in securing your accounts.

Using technology to detect cyberbullying is still a developing field because such attacks are often highly personal. We encourage women leaders to take a preventative approach to protect yourself and your community.
