Tuberculosis (TB) remains the world’s top infectious killer, with Vietnam being among the top 10 countries with the highest burden rates. Infectious disease experts from the University of Sydney are working closely with The University of Sydney Vietnam Institute research staff and partner institutions to conduct evidence-based research to aid the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of tuberculosis in Vietnam and around the world. “Strong partnerships between researchers and policy-makers is critical if we are to end TB within our lifetimes.” - lead researcher Professor Greg Fox, University Of Sydney. Two-time Olympian and USYD alum Keesja Gofers is on her way to the Paris Olympics after being selected for the Stingers women’s water polo team. Keesja played her first water polo game at age 6 when her sister’s U14s team didn’t have enough players. At age 10, she joined the Sydney Uni Water Polo Club and has been playing ever since. Keesja studied architecture at USYD, where she enjoyed creating connections within her cohort, the ability to express ideas, and the proximity to water polo training. We asked what she's most proud to which she replied ‘becoming an Olympian’. It was a goal that took her 8 years to achieve and there were numerous times when she thought it wasn’t possible. Now, she’s heading to her third Olympics and the first as a mother. Keesja had her daughter in March 2023 and has since returned to the national team, a comeback she is very proud of. We’re cheering you on Keesja! #USYD #USYDAlumni #AllezAus #ParisOlympics2024

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within our University and wider community, and across all our campuses. This year's theme - Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud - celebrates the unyielding spirit of our communities and invites all to stand in solidarity, amplifying the voices that have long been silenced. The University of Sydney invites you to join us in celebrating First Nations communities through a range of events this week. Some events are already sold out, and others are selling fast, so register now via the link: https://lnkd.in/ggbkn5_5 #USYD #NAIDOCWeek #NAIDOC2024

Business student Tara Rigney OLY is on her way to the Olympics after being selected for the Women’s Single Scull 🎉 Tara first started rowing in year 8, swapped to netball for a few years, and then came back to rowing in 2018 and has loved it ever since. She loves the problem-solving component of rowing and trying out different techniques on the water to make the boat go faster. She’s currently studying a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Sydney and is a proud member of the Sydney University Boat Club (SUBC). Some of her favourite rowing memories are from the SUBC training camps. What’s the key to balancing uni life and sport? Not letting things snowball and instead staying on top of things. We’re cheering you on Tara! #USYD #USYDAlumni #AllezAus #ParisOlympics2024

Led by Professor Carolyn Hogg FRSN, University of Sydney scientists have sequenced the entire genome of Australia's 'Easter bunny' - the bilby. This involved mapping all 3.66 billion DNA base pairs that make up the bilby's 'ladder of life'. This vital gene map will help conservationists in their work to prevent the threatened species going extinct. Thanks to Taronga Conservation Society Australia for hosting this event.
