There is ingenuity and innovation happening in the film industry as they move towards net zero! I learned a great deal at Creative BC's REEL GREEN Clean Energy Battery Workshop yesterday about what needs to change for the film industry to become more sustainable. The prevalence of diesel generators powering off site sets seems to be the most immediate problem, but municipal grid tie-ins at regular filming locations and new battery technologies are becoming viable and often cheaper alternative power sources. I was particularly enthused to discover that many of these battery innovations are made in BC products, with local company RIC Electronics collaborating with MBS Equipment Company Canada to develop arguably the star of the show, a 250kW UPS battery generator. Batteries may not fully replace diesel generators yet, but with a bit of thought and ingenuity, batteries can do a lot that diesel can’t while also lowering emissions. All in all, a great and informative event! Special shout out to panelists D. Diana Donaldson, Geoffrey Teoli, Fawn McDonald, Dylan Kilgour, and moderator Mary Jo Beirnes for their candid discussion about the film industry's sustainable future.
