The fellows 2023/2024 of the Young African Mathematicians (YAM) Program https://lnkd.in/eFgwma4p and representatives of the YAM network from Berlin, Bonn and Heidelberg and Münster met on 17 June 2024 at Mathematics Münster Universität Münster for the final meeting. In presentations the fellows shared their experiences in Germany and their personal and academic learnings. The initiator of the YAM Program, our Bonn Research Fellow Franca Hoffmann, took part in a panel discussion, where the fellows were provided tips, advice and insight into (academic) careers in and outside Germany. Find out why Hanno Gottschalk, Werner-von-Siemens Professor at Technische Universität Berlin, prefers the term "Automated driving" instead of “Autonomous Driving,“ and read the article about his fascinating research, "On Automated Driving Using AI.“ 👉 https://lnkd.in/dqRP9i8D 📌 A significant focus of his research is applying data-driven modeling using neural networks to automated driving, particularly specializing in its safety. 📌 The benefits of automated driving are clear, such as enhancing mobility for the elderly and reducing transportation costs and the number of cars needed. However, additional challenges can arise, such as increased micro-transports due to lower transport costs, which can lead to more crowded streets. Gottschalk also addresses these issues in the article. 📌 He has been a professor for “Mathematical Modeling of Industrial Life Cycles” at the Institute of Mathematics at TU Berlin since April 2023, when he also became a member of MATH+. His appointment marked the first of three new TU professorships for the Werner-von-Siemens Centre for Industry and Science e.V. Congratulations to Bruno Klingler, Einstein-Professor for Algebra at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, on receiving the "MATH+ Distinguished Fellow" award. 💐 The MATH+ Distinguished Fellowship Program recognizes outstanding contributions to the mathematical sciences and supports the work of world-leading mathematicians in Berlin. 👏 📍 Bruno Klingler is a French mathematician specializing in arithmetic and algebraic geometry. He is one of the most renowned mathematicians in arithmetic geometry worldwide. 📍 His academic career began in France, where he studied mathematics, physics, and philosophy, ultimately earning a double master’s degree in mathematics and philosophy. Klingler then focused on mathematics. After earning his doctorate in Paris in 1997, he had research stays at Yale University and the University of Chicago before returning to Paris in 2007 to assume a full professor position. We welcome 'MATH+ Distinguished Visiting Scholar' Grigorios A.
