Also known as seasonal depression, it is a type of depression that occurs when the seasons change. Though it is common during the onset of winter, some might experience SAD during summer as well.

Some common symptoms of seasonal affective disorder include sadness, weight gain, fatigue, loss of interest in doing usual activities, sudden change in eating patterns, and mood swings.

According to the World Health Organization, those who live in regions where there are shorter daylight hours are more likely to experience SAD. Studies also show that SAD is common in women and often begins during adulthood.

Seasonal depression is more common in people who have a family history of mental illness such as depression or schizophrenia.

Scientists believe that reduced activity of the brain chemical serotonin, which helps regulate moods, can trigger the seasonal affective disorder.

Sunlight is responsible for maintaining the serotonin levels in the brain. Therefore, SAD is common during winter when many places see a drop in sunlight.
