Frequent earthquakes

Delhi has been facing frequent earthquakes for the last several years. Here's why.

Location

Delhi is located on the Sohna fault line, the Delhi-Moradabad fault line, and the Mathura fault line.

What are these?

Earthquakes occur due to the shifting of tectonic plates. With Delhi being located on these fault lines, it feels strong tremors. All these are active seismic fault lines.

Fourth highest seismic zone

Delhi is located in the fourth-highest seismic zone out of the five classified by the Bureau of Indian Standards. This means it's extremely vulnerable to earthquakes.

Not the epicentre
