MeitY defers plans to form gaming self regulator, seeks common ground

This comes even as the sector is facing a crisis with the government’s decision to impose 28% GST on real money gaming companies. Some of the companies like Dream11 and Play Games24x7 have already received notices demanding GST dues totalling Rs 55,000 crore.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has deferred plans to form a self-regulatory body (SRB) for the gaming sector, senior government officials told ET. It is now waiting for "harmonisation" of the views of various ministries — MeitY, law, finance and home — on the industry before proceeding further, they added.“There is a discussion between the ministries that harmonisation should happen and everybody (should) be on the same platform
