View: Watching television cannot remain our favourite sport

Several state governments — notably Odisha, whose chief minister is a hockey enthusiast — have taken the initiative to foster sports prodigies.

Many of the 127-member squad that is doing India proud in Tokyo come from sections of society that are not, well, privileged and have chosen sports that do not have the cachet of cricket.

This past week, my best friend’s domestic help Bijita was eagerly watching India’s hockey matches on TV. She confided that had things been different, she may well have been playing there. As a child, she had shown a knack for hockey — a common sport in her remote tribal village — but her father did not want to spend Rs 1,000 on a basic kit.
