How does CO2 storage work? CO2 storage utilises the same trapping mechanisms that has kept oil and gas underground for millions of years. Captured and liquefied CO2 will be shipped to the Northern Lights receiving terminal before transported by pipeline to the geological storage site 110 km offshore. Here, the CO2 is pumped through an injection well into the reservoir 2.6 km under the seabed. The reservoir consists of layers of porous rock currently filled with salt water and a sealing layer of caprock that ensures CO2 containment. When the CO2 is injected, it will displace the salt water and get structurally trapped in the porous rock where it will be retained for thousands, potentially millions of years. Essentially, we are putting carbon back where it belongs! #NorthernLightsCCS #CO2Storage #CarbonManagement

Om oss
We are developing the world’s first open-source CO2 transport and storage infrastructure. Our aim is to enable the decarbonisation of industrial emissions and to facilitate the removal of CO2 from the air. We are part of a growing movement to actively manage the carbon cycle and get it back in balance. As we develop our business, we will share, listen and encourage innovation and technology development. Northern Lights is a first – and we want to make it easy for others to follow.

Increasing demand for CCS services in Europe! This year Northern Lights will be ready to receive CO2 at our facility in Øygarden, being the only company ready now to sign commercial agreements on CO2 transport and storage. By the end of 2023, we had four signed customers and engaged in around 200 different customer dialogues, demonstrating the increasing interest in CCS services across Europe. Northern Lights aims to expand our storage capacity in line with market developments and the maturation of commercial agreements. Northern Lights EU funding approved! Today, the European Commission approved the award of €131 million under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funding scheme. This contribution affirms our crucial role in the EU’s 2030 decarbonisation objectives and enables the next phase of our project expansion. “We are ambitiously planning for growth to offer CO2 transport and storage services to industry across Europe. Northern Lights is ready to inject 1.5 million tonnes CO2 this year and are planning to expand to the capacity with an additional 3.5 million tonnes for the next development phase”, says Managing Director Tim Heijn.

CCS plays an important part in reaching Net Zero Emissions by 2050. In the International Energy Agency (IEA)'s Net Zero by 2050 Roadmap, it is estimated that CCS will account for 8% of the global emission cuts. Northern Lights' purpose is to facilitate the decarbonisation of industrial sectors where other emission-reducing measures are limited. By providing CCS services, Northern Lights enables significant emission reductions for key industries in Europe. According to IEA analyst Mathilde Fajardy who presented at the Northern Lights Summit 2023, if all announced CCS projects are realised, the road to Net Zero remains within reach. Dutch CO2 soon on its way for safe and permanent storage on the Norwegian Continental Shelf! This week we attended first pile ceremony for the CCS project in Yara Sluiskil. From the ammonia production, Yara will capture and liquefy 800,000 tonnes CO2 annually which will be transported by ship and stored under the seabed by Northern Lights. Congratulations on this important milestone and thank you for having us.
