Heavy rains have battered two-thirds of Slovenia for days, resulting in an estimated €500 million ($549 million) in damages. While buildings and bridges were destroyed, residents like Drago Hudofisk, from the village of Prevalje, emphasized the importance of life over material losses. Watching his family home disappear into mud, Hudofisk remarked on nature's retaliation, saying, "Water has the power, it destroys everything." Thousands were evacuated from northwest and central Slovenia, with emergency services working relentlessly to rescue and clear paths. Since Friday, the floods have claimed six lives, including two Dutch tourists believed to have been struck by lightning and four Slovenians who were either killed or drowned. By Monday, the Slovenian Environment Agency noted that floodwaters were receding, but some regions remained inaccessible. A levee collapse along the Mura river necessitated further evacuations. The ski town of Kranj raised concerns over potential pollution in the Sava river, impacting Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia due to damaged sewage systems. The European Union extended support through machinery and engineering teams. Additionally, Slovenia sought assistance from NATO in the form of helicopters, soldiers, and temporary bridges. Neighbouring countries Croatia and Hungary dispatched helicopters, while Germany sent a civil protection unit.
