How can entry level leaders benefit from consulting?
“Consultants tell you the time by looking at your watch.” In my consulting journey, I’ve learned to keep an open mind and identify where my clients’ watches are. Many people think consultants know it all but actually we just know the right questions to ask. I learn most of the domain knowledge from the clients that I’m consulting with and reuse that for another client who may be facing a similar problem.

What are some creative and low-cost ways to recognize and reward your team members?
Know which milestones are important for your team members and celebrate them. However, it’s important to have the right balance between personal and professional milestones. Eg some people may be uncomfortable celebrating birthdays and may be more comfortable celebrating work anniversaries instead. Besides celebrating milestones, dropping in surprise thank you notes at the right time works well too. 📝

How can you avoid common micromanagement pitfalls?
A good practice is to bring team members early into the discuss and co-create the purpose, scope and deliverables of each project. Gone are the days where the manager knows everything. Nowadays, we’ll depend on each team members’ experience and expertise to bring a project to fruition. As leaders, we should aim to guide and facilitate and guide each team member on creating their own SMART goals that ultimately converge into what the rest of the team is doing. Help them find the right pieces of puzzle and guide them to completing the puzzle together.

How can you avoid common micromanagement pitfalls?
Communication is key. We often think of micromanagement as leaders being overly involved all the time. In my experience, it’s best to have open and consistent communication with the team because there will be times where they might appreciate more oversight and handholding. There will also be times where they can work independently and require less supervision. The style in which you support your team should also not be cast in stone. As leaders, it’s important to have constant reviews to make sure you’re providing the right level of support at the right time for your team members.
