Assam: Minor boy gets 7 years in prison for rape, murder of 6-year-old

SILCHAR: A special court in Assam’s Hailakandi district has sentenced a teenager to seven years of imprisonment for rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in 2022. But the court said the 15-year-old boy will have to stay in a shelter home till he turns 18.
The court found the accused, who was 14 years old at the time of committing the crime, guilty on Monday.
The boy was arrested on February 13, 2022 and was sent to a shelter home by the police.
Special judge Sanjoy Hazarika pronounced the sentence under IPC sections 302 (murder), 201 (destroying evidence of crime) and 363 (kidnapping) and Section 6 of the POCSO Act (penetrative sexual assault) after hearing 29 witnesses.
Special public prosecutor Monika Deb informed the media that the six-year-old girl went missing on February 9, 2022. As the girl didn’t return home, her father lodged a missing case at Ramnathpur police station the next day. Three days later, members of the family and villagers launched a search and found the mutilated body of the minor girl.
The then SP of Hailakandi, Gaurav Upadhyay, launched an investigation and police later arrested the minor boy and his father, both neighbours of the victim girl. On interrogation, the boy confessed to the crime and narrated the entire incident. According to the accused’s confessional statement, he strangulated the girl after raping her. The boy’s father was released on bail.
