NEW DELHI: The Minnesota Vikings have made the decision to part ways with running back Alexander Mattison, according to reports circulating on Thursday. This move comes after Mattison had signed a two-year contract worth $7 million with the team just last spring. Despite the financial commitment, the Vikings have opted to release Mattison, who was slated to carry a hefty $4.6 million cap hit for the 2024 season.

Mattison's journey with the Vikings began when he was drafted by the team in the third round back in 2019. For four seasons, he served as a reliable backup and occasional substitute for star running back Dalvin Cook. However, Mattison's role shifted significantly in 2023 when Cook was released, thrusting Mattison into the starting position.

During his time as the starter, Mattison managed to achieve career highs in rushing attempts, carrying the ball 180 times, and rushing yards, accumulating a total of 700 yards on the ground. Despite these accomplishments, he notably fell short of recording a rushing touchdown and ultimately lost his starting role to Ty Chandler in December. Mattison also contributed in the passing game, hauling in 30 receptions for 192 yards and three touchdowns during the 2023 season.

Throughout his tenure with the Vikings spanning five seasons and 75 games, Mattison, who is 25 years old, amassed 2,370 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 584 carries. Additionally, he showcased his versatility as a pass-catcher, tallying 100 receptions for 718 yards and six touchdowns. Despite his contributions, the Vikings have made the difficult decision to part ways with Mattison as they look to reshape their roster moving forward.
