KMC drafts SOP to launch drive against illegal constructions in Kolkata
KOLKATA: The civic body on Friday carried out a major reshuffle in the buildings wing, sending more officials to look after illegal constructions in several pockets of Garden Reach.

For the first time, the KMC bosses have allotted two executive engineers for borough XV to look after troubled construction sites of the Garden Reach and Metiabruz zone. Nine sub-assistant engineers were sanctioned for the nine wards of the belt to take stock of under-construction buildings and report anomalies. “We have decided to strengthen manpower at the ward level to keep tabs on construction of illegal buildings in specific zones across the city. We have recruited several engineers in the recent past and, if need be, will recruit more,” said mayor Firhad Hakim. A KMC buildings department source said the department needed around 150 sub-assistant engineers to keep vigil on the illegal constructions in 144 wards.

“I have asked buildings department officials to work without fear. If they face political pressure, they should report to me. I will take appropriate steps,” Hakim said.

The buildings department officials on Friday participated in a protest rally at the civic headquarters against growing humiliation by a section of politicians in the boroughs. The rally was attended by over 150 officials.
