Ahmedabad, Rajkot saw highest number of hottest days in past 10 years
AHMEDABAD: In Feb 2023, the city recorded the second- and fourth-highest maximum temperatures for the month at 38.2°C and 37.7°C.
Likewise, Rajkot recorded four of five highest maximum temperatures in April since 2002 – at 44.8°C, 2017 marked a record for the city, whereas at 44.7°C, 2019 saw the city register its second hottest summer day.
Gujarat hottest days

The theme for World Meteorology Day which is celebrated on March 23 — ‘At the frontline of climate action’ — prompts citizens to take remedial action against rise in temperatures and other impacts of climate change.
The historic data of India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated there has been a steady rise in maximum temperatures in Gujarat’s cities over the decades.
But more alarmingly, the past decade from 2013 to 2024 recorded a high number of days with record maximum temperatures.

The analysis indicated that while Ahmedabad recorded a spike in maximum temperatures during winter months pointing to the phenomenon of warm winter, for Rajkot it is peak summer that has gotten hotter.

“There are multiple factors behind rising temperatures. For the urban areas, it is pollution and a relatively high density of population. Along with an increase in maximum temperatures, even minimum temperatures have gone up, showing that the temperatures are not coming down quickly after sundown,” said a Met department official.

“Absolute rise in temperatures takes a long time, but we do see sustained high temperatures which has several implications for sectors ranging from health to agriculture.”

Vadodara and Surat on the other hand have maintained the maximum temperature range, data shows.
