Political upheaval in Telangana municipalities as Congress gains ground

Hyderabad: In a span of just five months after the Congress came to power in Telangana, an unprecedented number of 33 municipal chairpersons belonging to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) have been voted out in no-confidence motions moved against them, the process of which actually began in Jan 2023.
While 32 municipalities have gone in favour of Congress, one civic chief post (Meerpet municipal corporation) was secured by BJP. In six other municipalities, BRS has managed to retain them by winning the trust vote.
Municipal officials said this is unparalleled in the state, where nearly 30% of the total 142 (129 municipalities and 13 municipal corporations) civic bodies had seen no-trust motions in such a short period. Even when Andhra Pradesh was a combined state, never was such a huge number of no-confidence motions moved in a short period, an official said.
In five other municipalities and corporations such as Peerzadiguda, the no-trust motions are yet to be completed as it takes a month to convene the council meeting to conduct a floor test after councillors serve the notice. Congress is also eyeing the Karimnagar municipal corporation chairperson post that is currently held by the BRS.
