NEW DELHI: Congress candidate Tariq Anwar won Katihar Lok Sabha constituency by a margin of 49863 votes.
The Katihar constituency is one of the 40 parliamentary seats in the state, falling under the general category and boasting a literacy rate of 41.69%. The Katihar constituency went to the polls on April 26 in the phase 2 of the Lok Sabha elections 2024.From this constituency, the key contenders are Dulal Chandra Goswami from the Janata Dal (United), who is contesting again from this constituency, Tariq Anwar from the Indian National Congress, and Gopal Kumar Mahto from the Bahujan Samaj Party.

In the 2019 elections, Dulal Chandra Goswami of the Janata Dal (United) emerged victorious with 558,984 votes, securing 50% of the votes. The runner-up was Tariq Anwar of the Indian National Congress, who secured 502,044 votes, accounting for 44.9% of the votes.
In the 2014 elections, Tariq Anwar of the NCP won the Lok Sabha election by securing 431,172 votes, capturing 44.3% of the votes. The runner-up was Nikhil Kumar Choudhary of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who secured 316,415 votes, accounting for 32.5% of the votes.
According to the 2011 Census, Scheduled Caste (SC) voters constitute around 7.9% of the electorate, and Scheduled Tribe (ST) voters make up around 5.5% of the electorate. Muslim voters comprise around 41.6% of the electorate, based on voter list analysis. According to the 2011 census, the rural population dominates this constituency, making up around 88.8% of the total electorate, while urban voters constitute around 11.2%.
