CBI formally arrests Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi liquor policy case
NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday formally arrested Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the now-scrapped excise policy case. The agency sought permission from the Rouse Avenue Court to arrest Kejriwal, which was granted by Special Judge Amitabh Rawat.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Delhi high court stayed a trial court's order granting bail to Kejriwal in the same case. Justice Sudhir Kumar Jain, presiding over a vacation bench, allowed the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) application seeking a stay on the bail order. The court noted that vacation judge Niyay Bindu had passed the order without thoroughly examining the ED's entire material on record, which indicated "perversity".

The high court bench expressed its inability to understand how the trial court could state in paragraph 16 of the order that it was not possible to review thousands of pages of documents submitted by the respective parties, while in paragraph 36, it claimed to have addressed the relevant arguments and contentions raised by the parties.

Kejriwal is currently in prison in connection with the alleged excise scam money laundering case being investigated by the ED.
