Mysuru: The University of Mysore on Friday presented a deficit budget of Rs 80.4 crore for 2024-25.
The varsity’s authorities attributed the reasons like increase in expenditure, and below-par revenue generation through academic programmes for the deficit budget this financial year.
The varsity’s finance officer KS Rekha presented the budget at the Academic Council meeting chaired by vice-chancellor NK Loknath. It projected a revenue of Rs 277.4 crore, including government grants. It has projected an expenditure of Rs 357.7 crore, leading to Rs 80.4 crore deficit.
Of the Rs 277.4 crore projected for 2024-25, the UoM expected the release of Rs 171.8 crore government grants, and a pension grant of Rs 50 crore. It also expects a revenue of Rs 42 crore from the admission, registration and coordination fees. It has projected Rs 45 crore through exams.
Of the Rs 357.7 crore expenditure, the varsity has projected to spend Rs 170. 4 crore for disbursement of salaries to teaching and non-teaching staff, Rs 120 crore towards pension payment. For general administration, it has set aside Rs 3.1 crore, while research and extension activities have got Rs 1.6 crore. UoM has projected to spend Rs 26.9 crore towards student welfare activities, Rs 21 crore for campus maintenance, and Rs 14.6 crore for exam-related activities.
Panel to study
downsizing of staff
UoM has also constituted a four-member committee, headed by retired vice-chancellor Ambalike Hiriyanna, to study and submit the report on downsizing the staff, and reducing unnecessary expenditure. A decision to this effect was taken by the varsity at the behest of Karnataka State Higher Education Council.
The other members of the committee are retired IAS officer B Ramu, retired joint registrar of state public accounts department Ramachandraswamy and deputy registrar K Narendra.
UoM registrar V R Shailaja said the varsity, after receiving this report and its recommendations, will take a decision on downsizing the staff to avoid unnecessary expenditures.
