Two looters nabbed after encounter

Varanasi: In a joint action of Lalpur Pandey, Shivpur and Crime Branch police, two looters were nabbed following an encounter near Azamgarh underpass on Monday. Later, police also arrested another aide of the looters and a jeweller involved in purchasing the looted gold jewellery from them.

Varuna zone Chandrakant Mina said on getting inputs on the movement of criminals, a joint team of Lalpur Pandeypur and Shivpur police stations and Crime Branch launched a checking drive near Azamgarh underpass of Ring Road during the wee hours. During the checking, when the cops signalled two motorcyclists to stop, they tried to escape towards Aidhey village. However, the cops surrounded them near an under-construction building, when they opened fire at the police team.

Mina said that when the cops retaliated, one of the miscreants, Kishan Saroj, suffered bullet injuries in his leg. The cops also caught his aide Vikky alias Chandan Jaiswar after chasing him.

Police later rushed Saroj to hospital after recovering a motorcycle, Rs 24,850, a country-made revolver and live cartridges from the two.

Mina said that during the initial interrogation, Vikky divulged the name of his third gang member as Vikas Kumar and jeweller Shivam Verma, who used to purchase looted the gold ornaments from them.

Both were also arrested from their places.
