Urjit Patel joins Britannia Industries board
Mumbai: Britannia Industries has appointed former Reserve Bank of India governor Urjit Patel to the company's board. The decision was made during the board meeting held on 2nd July 2024.
The board of directors approved the appointment of Patel and Sunil Siddharth Lalbhai, chairman, Atul as additional non-executive independent directors. The appointments are effective from 2nd July 2024 and will continue for five years until 1st July 2029, subject to shareholder approval.
Patel, aged 60, served as the 24th Governor of RBI from 2016 to 2018.
During his tenure, the central bank made significant decisions on the new monetary policy framework, insolvency, and demonetisation. Before his governorship, he was the RBI's deputy governor from 2013, handling monetary policy, economic research, and financial market operations. From 2022 to 2024, Dr. Patel served as Vice President for Investment Operations at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. He currently chairs the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy.
Lalbhai is the Chairman of the Board of Atul since August 2007 and its Managing Director since June 1984. He holds a postgraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Massachusetts, USA and a postgraduate degree in Economic Policy and Planning from Northeastern University, USA.
