Watch: Road caves-in on outskirts of Ahmedabad after heavy rainfall
Amid heavy rainfall that the city has witnessed, a road collapsed in the Shela area of Ahmedabad city.
AHMEDABAD: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's (AMC) promises of a flood-free monsoon were shattered within a few hours of heavy rain. The city's infrastructure crumbled under the pressure, with streets turning into streams, homes being inundated, and roads caving in.
In Shela, near Sky City Apartments, a portion of a two-lane road collapsed due to heavy rainfall just an hour after cracks appeared and warning signs were placed earlier in the day.
The incident was captured in a video shared by ANI, which shows a large pothole formed in the middle of the road, with water flowing into the cavity.

Despite assurances from the AMC about improvements in the stormwater drainage system, the city's vulnerability to urban flooding remains high.
The iconic Sindhu Bhavan Road was not spared from the rain's wrath, which disrupted traffic. Science City and Gota were the worst affected areas, receiving six inches of rain each within three hours. Other areas like Bopal, Naroda, Sarkhej-Chandlodia, and Chandkheda also experienced significant rainfall. Even posh areas such as Usmanpura, Jodhpur, Bodakdev, and Ranip recorded a minimum of 2 inches of rain.
Auda's recent road-digging activities for stormwater lines and drainage improvements backfired, leaving several incomplete trenches exposed and creating dangerous waterlogging zones. Vejalpur's Shrinandnagar was heavily flooded, and two AMTS buses got stuck in the slush near Vrindavan Heights in Gota. Homes in Juhapura, a densely populated locality, were flooded due to overflowing drains.

The road connecting Indira Bridge and Sardar Nagar near the airport was another casualty of the downpour. By mid-afternoon, the Mithakali and Akbarnagar underpasses were rendered completely unusable, forcing traffic diversions. Later, the Makarba, Silverstar, and Durga School underpasses also succumbed to the rising water levels.
Across Gujarat, 211 of 252 talukas received at least 1mm of rain on Sunday, indicating widespread rainfall across the state. The IMD forecast suggests that the state is likely to receive widespread rain for the next five days.
