Delhi water crisis: At Munak canal, water gets protective cover

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police have started a drive against the water mafia allegedly stealing water from Munak Canal.

While personnel from six police stations have been deployed to check water theft, police have started extensive patrolling on the banks.

On Thursday, a confidential report was prepared by the police and shared with lieutenant governor VK Saxena and the police commissioner, sources said. The police’s report comprised information about how Munak Canal was being monitored and intelligence being gathered against people supposedly involved in water theft.

Since Wednesday, police were seen patrolling on bikes and SUVs. An officer said that water flows from Haryana via Narela, Shahbad Dairy, Samaypur Badli and Bawana. The areas are being constantly checked. The policemen will monitor the canal in three shifts. Pickets are also being set up.

“We have deployed staff here. About 120 policemen will monitor Munak Canal 24 hours a day. If anyone is found stealing water, strict action will be taken,” a senior officer said.

Six permanent pickets will monitor suspicious movement. "They will be deployed in two shifts, starting from 8 am to 8 pm and from 8 pm to 8 am," the officer said. In the pickets, 24 police personnel will be there and 16 will be on motorbike patrol. Two emergency response vehicles have been deployed with three policemen in each.

Police said they have seized a tanker from Kacchi Sadak of the canal and a tractor. Deputy commissioner (outer north) Ravi Singh said a case has been filed under Environment Protection Act at Narela Industrial Area police station.
