PANAJI: Goa’s iconic Latin Quarter, Fontainhas, is gearing up for the maiden edition of 'Festa do Povo,' a vibrant celebration set to honour the cultural heritage of the state with a line-up of renowned musicians, culinary artisans, and local community figures at the helm.

Scheduled for December 9 and 10, the festival is the brainchild of leading civil society figures in collaboration with the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP). Spread over two days, the Festa do Povo will roll out on December 9 at the St Sebastiao ward and at the Sao Tome ward on December 10 by 7pm.

The St Sebastiao ward will resonate with the melodies of traditional folk music presented by performers like Carlos Meneses, a part of the group 'Ekchar,' offering a mix of Konkani tunes and Portuguese fados.

Local residents are all set to tantalize taste buds with a fusion of Indo-Portuguese flavors. Christopher Menezes, a resident of St. Sebastiao ward, promises an array of culinary delights with a distinct Goan and Portuguese touch such as feijoada, apa de camarao, pasteis de nata, etc.

The festival's musical ensemble promises jazz melodies by 'Still Waters' to nostalgic classics presented by 'Sancho e Tasha' while drinks and snacks will be served at stalls by Antonio’s and Joseph’s.

Middle Eastern dishes with a Goan touch such as chorico hummus and cafreal shawarmas will be conjured by chef Raul Gomes Pereira, while Russell Pinto pledges to offer classic Goan sandwiches brimming with flavors.

“This is the first step towards a community building in Panjim and it must be encouraged,” Gomes Pereira said.

Open-air art displays will showcase the craftsmanship of 20 artists, complemented by exhibits from students at the Goa College of Art.

Reflecting on the community spirit behind the event, the people of Fontainhas stressed the importance of safeguarding these traditions. Marino De Souza said that the festival plays an important role in preserving Goa's essence against the changing times.

Roy Botelho, owner of Hospedaria Abrigo De Botelho said, "This festival resonates with the true spirit of Goa—a celebration of local flavors and soulful tunes fostering connections among neighbors."
