PANAJI: The directorate of health services will be placing two dedicated ambulances on state roads, especially highways, for accident victim response. This is being done at the behest of the directorate of transport to ensure round-the-clock service.

“Until now, there was no roadside accident trauma response in Goa,” said director of transport Rajan Satardekar. “These will be the first ambulances to focus exclusively on road safety,” he added.

These ambulances will be operated under the directorate of health services by the GVK. One ambulance each will be deployed in each district.

“If required, we shall call for two more ambulances to be on standby. This is a ready set-up in terms of communication, connection with facilities, and the availability of drivers and crew. The vehicles will be positioned in places where the probability of road accidents is higher,” Satardekar said.

The move comes a day after a fatal accident in Porvorim on the intervening nights of September 2 and 3, involving an electric SUV, resulted in the deaths of three people and the injuries of two others. The self-accident occurred within a month of the Banastarim drunk-driving accident, in which three people were killed by a Mercedes-Benz SUV.

“There are several problem areas, and the solutions differ. We will be tapping into the i-RAD data to make Goa’s roads safer,” he said.
